The Americans also named a cruiser "Canberra" to honour the Australian cruiser of the same name which was sunk at the Battle of Savo Island. They also named a destroyer after Harold Holt, the Australian Prime Minister who was very supportive of their efforts in Viet Nam.

I think it's a great idea. A courtesy visit to Montevideo on her maiden voyage would really annoy the bunch just over the river - would be worth naming her just for that.
