V22 Osprey - Israeli TP Comments

An interesting comment from one of two Israeli Air Force TP's who have spent time in 2011 and 2012 flying them in the US.

From Flight Global:-

"The plane is naturally energetic. The accelerations are literally breathtaking and the mid-stage in which the plane transitions from a vertical standpoint to a horizontal one is problematic as well," he says.

"The pilot uses a control stick and a system that is similar to a throttle. In one standpoint, the control stick serves to determine altitude while the 'throttle' serves to determine speed. In the other standpoint, each of them serves the opposite role. In the mid-stage you feel like you're losing control of the plane. I imagined that the fly-by-wire system would function more smoothly, but discovered that in some cases we needed to intervene."
(my italics).

Another case for the PlayStation generation... ?

That sounds familiar

Kind of a moot problem for the UK, seeing as we will never be able to afford to purchase any, but that's by the by.

Any transition to get a tiltrotor 'on the wing' will involve this effect; it goes with the territory. Given the Spams can handle it, it's clearly not that uncontrollable!

We can't afford the F35 but we seem to be persevering with that!

Arguably once the GR4's go, we need something to replace them.

The V22 wouldn't really add much to what we do now, and finding a carrier to put them on might not be simple. Just sayin'. It's a fab tiltrotor, just built for a niche mission that we don't often need to execute, and if we do, the answer's a Herc and 2 Chinnys. Now what's the question?

Getting them off the Wing might pose a problem for the Brits however.
