Found this link thanks to the RAF Boy Entrant Association mailing list.
"Her new role was to take observers aloft in order for them to be able to spy on the surrounding countryside as well as the streets and alleys of Nicosia where terrorist activity was high in August 1956."

Does anybody recall the UK newspaper spoof article, years ago (01 April), which claimed that an RAF Balloon Unit had been discovered in the wilds of Scotland - the personnel had been forgotten about at endex WW2, and were now of 'Dad's Army' vintage. Made I larf..........
