I think that that characterisation of the Daily Mail is fair enough. After all most of us are quite happy to characterise Guardian readers as yoghourt eating, sandal wearing, bearded wimpy lefty schoolteachers. Guess neither stereotype is very accurate, but as long as they're not taken too seriously they are a useful shorthand, I suppose.

It's a useful shorthand for the way in which the tabloids operate, I'd suggest, and the Mail does seem particularly good at striking a holier-than-thou line while perhaps not quite abiding by the highest standards of truth and honest (see one Mr H Grant for more details).
I can't help thinking that there's some truth behindthe various jokes which have at their core the notion of the Daily Mail's editorial team yearning for the opportunity to run a story with a headline along the lines of 'Euro Human Rights Law Allows Muslim Hate Preacher to Lower House Prices: What Would Diana Have Thought?'

As it happens the DM did run the Sep 2011 story about "RBL poppy sellers being banned from city streets because of council red tape".
That is certainly not the same as the RBL avoiding areas to avoid offending "minorities", but it rather looks as if it was this truthful story which was then exploited for purposes of misinformation.
Regardless of Load_Toad's personal opinion of the DM, I didnt interpret his post as actually blaming the DM for this particular outrage bus, but making a general point. Most of us managed to work out what he meant:
Back on thread. This was a particularly irresponsible outrage bus which exploits people's commendable wish to observe remembrance and honour the armed forces.
I would like to think that the OP has done us all a favour by exposing this malevolent rumour.

Does every act these days have to be a Daily Mail outrage piece and chance for a war?
