Canada's case for the V-22 SAR role

At Heli Expo Dallas a few weeks back, I picked up a copy of the Canadian Helicopters magazine (Jan-Feb 2012). There was an interesting article for putting a case forward for the V22 in the SAR role in the RCAF. This being light of the impending retirment of the CC-115 Buffalo currently used to complement the CH-149 Cormorant.

So I guess this will become the CV-122?
Or sanity will prevail when the Canucks realise they can't afford it.

The Fixed Wing SAR project works on the next floor up from me. I think that nice picture will remain just that ................... a nice picture (note -I have no inside knowledge, other than having dealt with Boeing Philly for the last 8 years (on and off) and a rough idea that V-22 is considerably more expensive that other platforms that could fill the FWSAR role).

Low - the project requirement is for a Fixed Wing (AKA Plank-Wing) SAR platform, your comment would be like saying you'd like to have seen a rescue hoist put on a Nimrod.

Nice artwork, but that paint scheme makes anything look great. Even the Buffalo.

Apparently, those UASF C-27s are already spoken for.

Sanity is not an issue as this aircraft has never been under consideration.

To a country that won't receive any support from the manufacturer.

CWD - My point is that you won't see a hoist on the V-22 either, the downwash making for something of an E-ticket ride.

Though I'm biased (flew the Buf for seven years,) I think we should go with Viking Air new or renewed DHC5s. Certainly budget friendly.

My second choice would be Spartans.

Ospreys would be ridiculous given that we already have the CH149. Probably rumours being spread by V-22 builders...

Low, there is no requirement for a rescue hoist on the Canadian Fixed Wing SAR platform, we have Merlins (err Cormorants - I'm still thinking RAF) to do the dope-on-a-rope stuff. I was attempting to draw a parallel between the FWSAR requirement in the RCAF with a (now-defunct) UK equivalent.
