Could be one of 2 incidents, 1st and more likely was the post ejection Mig23 that eventually crashed in Belgium, 2nd would be the Biz Jet that got airborne from Switzerland and never spoke again.
The Mig23 was 4th July 89
The Biz jet was around the same time but was intercepted by numerous countries QRA and crashed south of Iceland.

ORAC
It was the Kiev? transit to the North Cape from the Black Sea, IIRC we'd been on reinforced Q for about a week when she transitted the UKADR and nothing happened. The night after she cleared to the north, 75 Bear's of the D and F type came round the Cape routed E and S of the Shetlands and then flew back towards the Kiev simulating NATO attacks on her.

It must have been a bit sporting handing over from Noggy radar to UKADGE and back, plus any Danes, Dutch and the US out of Kef all joining in. Would be intersting to know how much NATO Q was up at the same time.

trap one,

Thank you for jogging the memory, it was the Mig. After all these years it still stands out for me as the perfect example of how things go to rats because people get excited and tried & tested procedures go out of the window. Mind you, a couple of years later a 3 day station exercise got binned early thanks to Rod Stewart!

From my own vague recollections, living in the underworld at Boulmer 1978 - 80, I don't recall anything beyond two from each Northern and Southern? Same even during more hectic moments when at Bentley Priory in 1986. I do recall an awful lot of Q-charts for AOCs post weekend briefings on occasion though.
