Perfectly normal. There are two schools of thought on this one.
Big hole = quick easy escape route for cabin occupants
or
Big hole = quick ingress of water
Time spent over water at Avonmouth is absolutely minimal.
The aircraft should remain within autorotative distance of shore/land.
If a catastrophic failure occurs it will make very little difference if it was water or land to the end result.
