Martin-Baker's Meteor meets Typhoon

Still going strong, but for how long? Some good photos here, despite grey 'plane /grey day background.

Should imagine a while as there is nothing to replace it, needs a configuration like that, IE wing mounted outboard pod engines, tandem seater and fast enough to be viable in testing............ name another one

Doesn't 638 look 'the biz' in the Gloss Black paint scheme!

Not often one sees powder stains each side of a cockpit, I wonder how many seats have departed the aircraft to leave that kind of deposit?

Why is that a requirement?

I was sitting outside of the Black Bull at Coniston when this formation flew over. Wondered why a Typhoon was flying in formation with a Hawk and Meteor.

Now I know, thx

Why wing -mounted engines

Trim Stab

It's not unknown for the seat rocket to disturb the airflow to the intakes on departure sufficient to cause a surge. Not a good idea esp. if the "test platform" is something along the lines of a Hawk or T-Bird Harrier, and only marginally better if using a twin-engined jet such as an F4, F5, Alphajet, Tornado, etc.

Glad it worked this time. In November 1999, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first probe and drogue contact in air-to-air refuelling, this Meteor and a Eurofighter, as it was then still called, were scheduled to make contact with a VC10 tanker and provide a photo opportunity of the "then and now" variety.

In the event one of the aircraft went u/s and only a singleton took part. Guess which aircraft turned up serviceable. (Hint - it didnt have 'euro' or 'fighter' in its name!)
