eric h day
Hi every one i have recently been reading many coments on works of art by Eric Day of which i have three, all from 1979 and of air sea rescue helecopters one with the number xj429.they are not prints but original watercolours and i am trying to find out more about Eric andwhere to get them valued for the old insurance. Can anyone help with any info many thanks craig.

Might be worth giving these folk a try -although I do not believe Eric was a GAVA memebr they may be able to help.

I seem to remember there were a number of his works in the Officers' Mess of No 1 MHQ RAuxAF at Valency House, Northwood.
Presumably they are now at Northolt.

Sir,
There is more information on Eric H Day on google, and a string of replies.
I have just bought an original, at auction, of DH Flamingoes, and did some research as a result.
My father, bit old for combat duties, flew training aircraft, Airspeed Oxford's etc and intructed Polish airman; (he spoke Spanish!)*
Eric has passed away after a very long disability.
He did a couple of Locomotive Watercolours, on commssion, of which my Father thought rather good (as he was actially a rail engineer)

The cynical sounding, but very true answer is that artwork is 'worth' what somebody is prepared to pay for it. This is influenced by the standing in the art world of the artist, the age and subject matter of the painting. For example, an average Spitfire is always going to be more attractive than a well painted jet.
In the case of Eric Day, he was a very prolific artist and he is well known within military circles because he donated many of his works to Sqns & Messes. The works that he sold were done so at low cost, and as cruel as it sounds, there is integrity in the sayings about quantity v quality.
The place for you to realise its full value would be at a specialist auction. However auctions specifically for aviation subject matter do not exist and therefore you would need to rely on watercolour specific auctions. Online auctions are as good a place as any to try and sell choosing your descriptive wording carefully.
Sadly because of the nature in which Day did his business, I doubt that holding onto an original will ever see big bucks rolling in. Contempory watercolours can be had for <£500, and of course you cannot assertain replacement costs because Eric is no longer with us.

I have one myself - of Vulcan 646 - reminds me of happy days on IX Sqn - but judging by this auction I am wise not to treat it as an investment.

I have one from the early 80s of my Lightning BF. While not technically perfect in the reproduction of the aircraft, they were always quite "moody" pictures as I recall. I believe many of them were cloudy airborne pics, trying to create the same mood as some of the Mike Rondot paintings, but not on the same level. I can't remember how much was paid, but 50-100 quid rings a bell. As Tiger Mate said, he produced a lot of paintings so there is no rarity value - just memories.
judging by this auction I am wise not to treat it as an investment.
If it helps the OP, the last Eric Day original that I saw on eBay went for just less than £150. There is interest out there, but he's not a hugely sought after artist.

I have this print which I bought from Mr Day at Rheindalen shortly after returning from the first gulf.It is signed by the 3 British PoW's and I think it was proceeds to RAFBF?
I cannot find much about him really apart from the fact he pasted away in 1995 and as has already been said his work can be picked up periodically on ebay for not a lot.

Eric h Day print with original signature
Looking too see if anyone can let me know any info about a print I've got from my grandad, it's a Vulcan bomber over a church, it looks too be original signed
