Question Name for the C-17?

Have they come up with a British name for it yet?

May be corny but how about the C-17 GATEWAY?

It stays part of the US "G" family and reflects the Brize/Aircraft role in relation to Strategic Transport Ops.

How about the Gap-stopper?

Or an acronym: GTHTGIBATS

(Going to have to give it back all too soon!)

It's only leased, why does it need a Brit name? Even the Herc and Phantom didn't get them, and we owned them!

I probably shouldn't have posted this but this is what happens when you read a C-17 article in the Carterton Community Magazine that gets shoved through your door after watching England beat Germany 5-1!

Still days in Carterton are numbered so hopefully I won't be afflicted in this way again!

Beyond 'Moose', the best name I've heard for it is 'Buddha' - it's big, fat and everybody worships it!

Cool

BUDDAH- love it! ROFL! LOL!

Actually we have a proud tradition of giving Brit names to US aircraft.

The Wildcat was the Marlette, and the Avenger became the Tarpon. - OK, both FAA and very silly. In the RAF, PBY became the Catalina, and the B-29/49 was called the Washington.
Eric Brown commented that we give all American aircraft, "non-bellicose" names
I suggest,
The Bunny Rabbit.
The Pigmy Hippo.
The Wood Pigeon.

I could go on…

When we nearly bought the F-111 in the 60s, considerable head-scratching as to what to call it (since it had no official USAF name) took place. Eventually, AOC-in-C Bomber Command, as 'twas, suggested - Merlin. Some of the alternatives were either dull or barking mad or both....

The plan was that all strike/attack aircraft after this (apart from the Jaguar) would be named after birds of prey - a policy that lasted for exactly one aeroplane...

I'll get my anorak...

I like the story of the committee which formed to give the EFA a name. It seems that our box-head chums initially weren't too happy with continuing the 'fierce wind' precedent of 'Tornado' and were, perhaps understandably, not keen on 'Hurricane' or 'Tempest'. So they countered with 'Cyclone' - <<Ja - zis is good. Ve are liking 'Cyclone', auf Deutsch 'Zyklon'. Ve can haff 'Zyklon A' fur das Singleseater, und fur das Doppelseater, vielleicht 'Zyklon B'......??>>

When it was pointed out that 'Zyklon B' might, perhaps, limit export sales potential in places like Israel, an honourable truce was drawn and the old foes agreed that since they'd both had a 'Typhoon' or 'Taifun' in the Second World War, perhaps that would be OK for everyone........

C-17? Boeing Bloatmaster!!

How about C-17 "ASDA", since, eventually, it asda go back?

Hmmm. A.S.D.A. I'm sure there are several possibilities lurking in there.
