Thumbs down WSOp - the advert

Has anyone else noticed the glaring omission in the WSOp advert featured in this month’s edition of Loaded. The headline “Have You Got What It Takes” should be followed by “to avoid mentioning that over 85% of WSOps/AEOps fly Nimrods at Kinloss”. After spending eight happy years at Kinloss before moving on to pastures new I do not wish to cast a shadow on the home of The Mighty Hunter, but if the truth is out there, it certainly isn’t anywhere near the RAF careers advertising standards department. They would have potential WSOps believe that they will be flying Sea Kings and E3Ds which is obviously way off the mark.

That's good to hear.

If anyone would like to see the ad but doesn't want to spend £3.10 on a copy of Loaded, it can be found at:

http://www.freewebz.com/wsop/images/wsop-ad.jpg

Please note that the file takes ages to download.

The one point that needs to be taken up with the fella on the right of the page is that he claims do have taken part in a sporting activity.

We all know that is not true!

I've not seen the advert in question I must confess, although it is downloading unbelievably slowly in the background at the moment. Which is somewhat odd as I'm sat on a T1 line at my current place of work.

Anyways - I have been considering applying for such a position for a while now and would love to end up in a Nimrod at Kinloss - I don't suppose you could possibly mail me a brief synopsis of the highs and lows for you during your stint there, Mr Point? (Or, indeed, anyone else with similar experience). Details are somewhat hard to come by.

Many thanks, SSS

As a result of the ARR/FRI announcement last month it would be unethical for me to interest you in the career eeeeee job of the WSOp. Needless to say if you apply you are going to be spending quite some time in the north of Scotland. The shortfall in recruiting targets and fairly large commissioning numbers (particularly ops support) has resulted in operators working much harder than they did only two or three years ago. Nimrod crews have been forced to work with six instead of seven WSOp/AEOps per crew, and the SAR force is undermanned in the RadOp role by about a third. So if Kinloss hasn’t put you off, maybe the manning figures or the way in which the trade is viewed by the high and mighty will.

All this negative publicity for Kinloss

I really cant understand it - I mean who wants to be caught up in the rat race in a big city, with all the crime, not knowing who your neighbours are because they cant speak English etc.

Kinloss is NOT that bad. Ive been here for nearly 12 years and if I were posted south I would seriously consider a PVR. Going south 2 times a year is more than enough for me.

People bleat on about how its in the middle of nowhere, and that there is nothing for the young single chap/chapess, butI can reassure you its not all doom and gloom. And despite popular misconception we now have electricity and running water out of taps

Life anywhere is what YOU make it - OK so Kinloss is not for everyone, but please dont taint the image just beacuse you may not have liked it

Miny rant over, time to go down the one and only pub

Cool

I'm with Threashold on this one - Kinloss is a good place to be. I spent 2 years at Lossie but spent most of my weekends flying from Kinloss (VGS/Flying Club). There is a lot to be said for the Morayshire coast, nice pubs, great scenery and outdoors, cheap flying (for us non aircrew types)and low cost of living. Just as an example, when I was posted down south again my car insurance went from £250 to £600 in an instant!

Sure, the scottish air force is not for everyone but that's what makes us all different, and thank goodness for that.. .

Unhappy

there are definately two sides to this 'i love/don't love kinloss'.. .yes there is 'great' scenery (the novelty of looking at a hill wears off pretty quickly), but that doesn't help you when it comes to trying to get down south for a week's leave and the A9 is closed due to 'great' snowy scenery (how many extra travelling days do you get for a weeks leave - none). .hill walking is not everybody's cup of tea.. .I believe that the cost of living is actually higher in HMPK, when you take in to consideration you have to travel to Aberdeen to buy anything specific.. .I have recently returned (under duress) to HMPK from Waddo, which has left me substantially worst off, not to mention leaving my and my wife's friends and family 450 miles away, and am now probably going to watch (or listen) to my 1 year old grow up with a jock accent and, I believe, not as much opportunity when growing up. Luckily he hasn't got ginger hair.

Yes, some people do like the morayshire experience, but I, like the majority of people at HMPK, am in the English camp. Give me Waddo any day.

Have you seen the 'recruiting' website: -. .RAF - Airmen Aircrew

1st Threshold, my friend, you missed my point. I too like the Moray area, which has an awful lot to offer, but as TheSeeFarShadow points out the north of Scotland is not for everyone. The same rings true for the Vomit Comet. The regular chasing of a clockwork submarine in the Malin or D609 is not everyone’s cup of tea and the RAF should not mislead potential WSOp recruits by omitting significant facts about the trade. Encourage them with the truth (detachments etc.)but don’t let them believe that WSOps = SAR and AWACS.

The 'Official' AA website was in fact a private website run by an AA, hence the current homepage.

The website did have a lot of very good info, but the ARR announcement coupled with the fact that the RAF made out that it was there own and just put a link to it prompted the guy's response. At least that's what I'm told, I may be incorrect but if you look at the site I don't think so.

Mr Point my dear friend - I do beleive I hit the nail on the head - I never said one location was better than the other, and Im not getting into a my camps better than your camp argument. each has their merits, and there are those at these camps that are happy where they are. For me its being at Kinloss, which I now regard as home.

There will be those out there that may think Im a sad old git whose too set in his ways - and you are correct, but for me all the hastle of upping sticks and moving down south just does not appeal. There are those that argue the quality of life is better at places like Waddo, Cranwell etc based on their location, but I have all I need where I am, and without the rat race that is taking over middle England

There - hope thats as confusing as mud
