Average household debt in the UK is ~ £9,600 (excluding mortgages). This figure increases to £21,875 if the average is based on the number of households who actually have some form of unsecured loan.

What would the average debt without mortgages and car finance?

People need somewhere to live and most need some form of personal transport, given the crap state of greed-driven privatised public transport in this country.

But the £trillions owed by people living beyond their means and too stupid to realise it?

I have a £22,000 car loan (an unsecured loan) and a mortgage of over £100,000. So I owe more than the national average. Then again my wage is probably more than the national average.

Does that mean I am living beyond my means?

Now if you looked at my earnings to debt ratio, that might be a more useful indicator of whether or not I am living within my means...
