Who exercises on 31st December?

Last night, while enjoying the hospitality of friends in Dundee, we saw 9 aircaft flying in rough formation on a SW heading. No noise, evenly spaced, single yellow lights, no strobes . . . and there were enough of us still fairly compus mentis at to confirm what we saw with each other. Leuchars is not far away, so the local skies are not unused to plenty of military activity - but at 2330 on Hogmany?

Any ideas anyone?

Even trained observers can be fooled by them.

Do a Chinese Lantern search on Internet news engines.

There were a couple overhead at W-s-M last night as well. Thought it was the local forces of oppression at first.

I live 2 miles west of Leuchars and can confirm they did not come from here, but never saw anything myself, perhaps to much of the "wee cratur"

I have to admit to a bit of a stretching and limbering up before the evening sortie.

From an earlier era

"Who attacks at 7-8 o'clock on a Sunday morning in Hawaii"

11.30pm Perfect time for Aliens to invade as long as they stay out of the streets as think of the fight in Edinburgh with 200,000 drunken and belligerent revellers.

I was there, and so were the aliens (mostly because of the very favourable exchange rate with the Euro, I think). As the fireworks drained from the sky, several Chinese lanterns drifted overhead in a northerly direction. Nobody knew what they were, but by then the discovery of pink iguanas in the New Town wouldn't have surprised anyone.

They fly high enough to avoid ground scale clues, appear to move at a steady speed, and are visible over a great distance; there'll be loads more UFOs this year.
