I don't think the operational honours and awards follow the same New Year / Queens Birthday schedule. The list that covered ops between 31 Oct 07 and 31 Mar 08 was released on 25 Jul 08. The previous one for the period 1 Apr 07 to 30 Sep 07 was released on 7 Mar 08. On that basis the one covering the period 1 Apr 08 to 30 Sep 08 (i.e the latest) may not be released for another 2-3 months.

Still time to get your call to the CO's office!

Lets hope that in the Operational Honours that there are awards for the MERT and IRT teams in the 'Stan and Iraq and the Critical Care Air Support Teams (CCAST).

I know this year, CCAST were awarded the 'Team of the Year' for there role in returning critically ill and injured to the UK, but recognition of those involved would be nice.

Nope!

AVM CW Ness (see CB listing above) father, AM Sir Charles Ness, was a RAF Navigator.

Thought you'd have known that 3 Putt given you are as old as me.

By the way, got some new clubs and putter for Xmas, when is our next challenge!

Don't know about the peerage, but so far as knighthoods are concerned, here's my starter for ten for someone whom qualified as a Navigator who was awarded two:

Air Marshal Sir John Curtiss KCB 1981 (CB 1979); KBE 1982; FRAeS

Served War: Oxford Univ. Air Sqdn, 1942–43; Bomber Comd, 578 and 158 sqdns, 1944–45; Transport Comd, 51 and 59 sqdn, 1945–49; Training Comd, 1950–53; Fighter Comd, 29 and 5 sqdns, 1953–64; Dir, RAF Staff Coll., 1967–69; Stn Comdr RAF Bruggen, RAFG, 1970–72; Gp Capt. Ops, HQ Strike Comd, 1972–74; SASO, HQ 11 Gp, 1974–75; Dir-Gen. Organisation, RAF, 1975–77; Comdt, RAF Staff Coll., 1977–80; Air Comdr, Falklands Operations, 1982; AOC No 18 Gp, 1980–83, retd. Dir and Chief Exec., SBAC, 1984–89; Sec., Defence Inds Council, 1985–89. Mem. Exec. Cttee, Air League, 1982–93; President: Aircrew Assoc., 1987–93; Berlin Airlift Assoc., 1998–; RAF Oxford and Cambridge Soc., 1998–2005, now Pres. Emeritus; Milford-on-Sea Br., RBL, 2002–. Chm., Pathfinders Disaster Relief, 1995–2000; Chief Exec., Assoc. of Pathfinders, 1996–2000.

Looks like he earned both of them, the KBE being for the Falklands I suspect .......

Jack

PS Glad to see a sailor in Order No 5!

NLH - I'm sorry to say that Sir Barry now navigates up on high. He was my neighbour until 1999, and died very quickly probably in 2002 or 2003.

Folding Wings-Sir Charlie Ness, Barry Duxbury etc

B******s, drat and double drat I should have remembered that, I am definitely getting old!

At least I knew who Stradling was though.

Golf is on but, only when it is much, much warmer!

Good luck to Helen on Monday at Crannwell.

Three putt & foldy,

Look, you both well remember that the navigator brain is, by definition, somewhat less gifted than the norm. So the both of you can be excused for a tad loss of recall. And as for that Bigger Jugs joke!!

RN MBEs

What is it with our Admirals? Why do they ignore all the Lt Cdrs doing sterling work in preference, awarding SRs? The RAF recognise the Sqn Ldrs and the Army the Majors, yet the Lt Cdrs get ignored; PC gone mad again!

Mick

What is it with our Admirals?

Don't blame them, at least not on this occasion. It was indeed PC gone mad when, in 1993, the UK Government stopped awarding the BEM to sailors up to CPO, and awarded the MBE in lieu, as previously awarded to officers up to and including Lt Cdr, and Warrant Officers, but with a modest increase in the overall quota of MBEs.

Remember also that the RN has always had a different philosophy for the award of honours to officers, preferring at most levels to make them as "end of service" awards to officers and men who will not be further promoted. The RAF, on the other hand, has tended to prefer to award honours on a "stepping stone" basis. As examples, look no further than the current list at the top of this thread, with the RAF awarding CBEs to three officers all of whom already hold the OBE, and both Air Officers awarded knighthoods already holding awards in the Order of the British Empire.

Conversely, look at the RN list in the London Gazette for 31 December, and you will find that no one up to the rank of Rear Admiral has received any prior award, and that only the Vice Admiral receiving the KCB has a prior award, namely an OBE in the Order of the British Empire - and, noting that he is a submariner, that was probably awarded for a "sneaky" operation in command of an SSN, for which a gallantry award could not be made, rather than "LS&GC".

I am most certainly not saying that one system is better than another, just that they are different - very different!

Curiously enough, the RN half yearly promotion boards used to sit after the Queen's Birthday and New Year Honours Lists had been finalised by the PM's Office, and it was not unknown for someone who was expected to be "passed over" for promotion to receive an honour, only to "fool" a promotion board shortly thereafter and be selected for promotion .....
