Other measures proposed by the Government include a more organised approach to homecoming parades, a "Veteran's Card" to give returning soldier access to special perks and privileges, and a relaxing of media rules to allow soldiers to talk more openly to local newspapers.
Jesus F Christ. Homogonised state standardised celebrations.. creepy. Best not say too much in case the wrong person is reading my contra opinion.

You see the Legions of poppys in the House and on the BBC and you wonder whether it was better that once.. slightly fewer people wore them because they wanted to and not everyone nowadays because some dictat had been produced that compels them to appear all at once. I respected Jon Snow for deciding whether or not he wanted to wear one - isn't freedom of expression something that the poppy represents too?

Compelling and inducing firms to offer discounts and perks will be (ultimately) self defeating. Lifeboatmen are at least as worthy of any perk 'we' might get for doing or having done, our jobs - they go out in all weather and don't even get their fuel expenses back.

I like the bit about "imposing no extra burden". Yeah riiiight.
Just some parades and open days, as if they just happen by magic.

With , of course, absolutely no additional personnel security implications.

Now that's timely. I arrive back in the UK on 24 Jun, after a spell away, so will look forward to it.

And its only during the weekend before the Waddington airshow, so no problem with any time off there then!!!!!!

Dosn't anybody in authority THINK any more??? Or is this to further another senior officer's career?

Make sure you are in Blues that day - you wouldn't want to be confused for the senior service!

Government considers bank holiday for employees who die at work
The Telegraph - 27 Jul 09

Ministers are now planning an official Workers Memorial Day to mark their lives and a consultation has been launched which will include consideration of whether the event should become a public holiday.

How about making the Armed Forces Day a bank holiday first?!

Extra Bank Holiday

What about the Monday following Remembrance day, half way between Aug BH and Christmas.

I expect that the great champion of "equality and diversity", the Government, wants to be totally “inclusive”. “Empoyees” would include not only builders who fall off ladders but Servicemen (and women equivalents). It is a core, old fashioned, Socialist principle and clearly shows a complete grasp of the similarities; not.

I would, personally, see lumping them together as a significant insult to the Forces. I speak as someone who’s Dad had his final heart attack at work in an aeroplane factory.

Surely if one has died at work, one doesn't need a bank holiday! It's those who carry on living need the extra day off!
