Pilots on PPRuNe
Hi all,
I think it would be good if there was some way of identifying who on here is actually a pilot, I suggest in the box with a person's user name. I log on to PPRuNe to see the views of pilots as I want to read informed comment on subjects. Increasingly it seems that there is a lot of rubbish talked on here by people who obviously haven't got a clue and are not pilots. I don't mind non-pilots posting (indeed I am not a pilot), but when looking through 4 pages of comments if there was some way of knowing who is actually a pilot then it would be easier to see who is worth reading. I know a lot of very knowledgeable people in aviation that are not pilots, but I can read their thoughts on a lot of other forums. On here I'm interested in pilots views. All it would need would be a * or sign against a user name for example. I know this relies on people being honest and some people will lie, but the majority will be honest. As I said I'm not a pilot, have never wanted to be a pilot but still love aviation. Comments welcome and moderators over to you. Before the mud flies I will be up front, yes I am an aviation journalist, but the above is not for work purposes. I was into aviation long before being paid for it and I am just interested to hear informed opinion from a purely personal interest point of view.
Cheers
Dino

True. As well as who was, and who wasn't, and who'd like to be, and who'll never be, and who wishes they could be but can't, or could have been but couldn't, and who's bitter because they'll never be. It takes all sorts. Me, I'm none of the above, but it's generally a good forum with occasionally some cracking threads. I'm with Jacko on the above, it doesn't take long to spot the genuine from the fakers or wannabes. Therefore I'm not sure if we'd need any identifier.
Pip pip. Eight hours till I'll be at Leuchars. Good luck if you're involved in any way.

Military aircrew....and the backroom boys and girls....
I guess this would require some sort of extra symbology to allow the presumably worthless views of non-pilot aircrew and the Ops staff to be rapidly filtered out.
Whereabouts in the forum description does it mention journalists? I must have missed that bit...

I just love this! It about sums up the whole of PPRuNe.
Dino, I think you will soon realise that you DO need to be around a bit before you can sort everyone out - even then you probably never will.
But hey, your'e the journalist.

Lossie, the facility already exists within profiles. If Ppruners choose not to fill in their details, that's up to them!
If you want to know whether an opinion has been made by a pilot and therefore rendered valid, firstly look at their profile and then read a few of their previous posts.

My apologies to WSOs and other non-pilot aircrew everywhere, when writing my post I was thinking one dimensionally (and that will never do) as it is the P Pilots RuNE. It was near 12pm and I was tired - that's my excuse anyway! Backseaters and other aircrew are just as important as pilots. Personally, I'm interested in anyone's informed comment (as I said on the opening post) and I do appreciate how important a job the Ops and other ground crew guys and girls do.
By the way with regard to the comment about a journo being on here I would be perfectly happy to be denied permission to join PPrune and thus not to be able to post messages as indeed I'm not a pilot. It would be nice to be able to view the forum however as I do find it enjoyable. But I couldn't grumble even if this was not allowed as afterall as I said I'm not a pilot so if the forum mods want to do that would be understandable as that is what this forum was set up for.

Whirls - thanks for the tip.
PPrune Mod - yes your right I should be able to spot people. I was just thinking last night as I was scrolling through page after page of comments on a thread it would be quicker to be able to see who is in the trade, as it were, if I just wanted to read their views.

Perhaps we could also have some sort of filter facility where you could filter out comments made by people of insufficient rank - call it the Your Ideas Don't Matter button? The programmers shouldn't have too much trouble making it work, as there are working models up and down the RAF that they can copy.
The naughty enlisted people could then hack into the button and create their own: Visiting Air Rank Button, which would filter out everyone above or below Sgt, depending on your career interest level.
In the mean time Boscombe could be commissioned to adapt the filter for use by the air ranks, allowing them to post without having to read anyone elses thoughts, because they just know how it is. I thought the Train to Glasgow button was a good working title.

Just stick to the banter - its a lot safer. If somebody called minigundiplomat comes up on freq, he may tell you all about AFG. And if another user called AIDU comes up then be afraid, be very afraid...

I don't own this space under my name. I should have leased it while I still could
Then of course there are the crapulous ones that use confusing nicknames, I mean, Lossie from Peterborough. I ask you.
