Prison Vs The Mess
Thought you might like to comment on this:
Looks as though life in some prisons is more comfortable than some messes.
I remember not long ago there only being 1 working hot shower for half of the O'mess a one station.
How come "prison officers treat prisoners with kid gloves for fear of breaching their human rights"? Yet the government/MOD are content to ignore the shoddy accomodation that some of their service personel have to live in.
The recent Brize expose is not the 1st and won't be the last.

Err its any easy life and that is why prison doesnt work... there is no deterrent. Life should mean life...not 2 months and 30hrs community service....The present system is so wrong....

All our prisons should from now on be built in Mongolia/Siberia and if poss and cheaper North Korea. We have sub'd most other things out why not these useless toe rags.
The money saved could be spent on decent reabilitation centres where upon return, if you return, you get a decent chance at re-entering OUR society.
A daily flight ensures immediate deportation upon being found guilty.
No phones, liberals, hot water, or rights. Whereupon you show some responsiblity to soceity, it will reward YOU with rights not the other way round. Yoe eat what you grow, catch or dies around you.
Behave in a ten year sentance and IF you survive, you will serve ten years.
Misbehave and it will be 20(Nobody lasts more than 10)
Accomadation in kit form issued to every 100 prisoners. If you burn it down, thats it. Winters coming

Get with the programme man, Sec Duties don't exist anymore (I think they're called ancillary duties or something like).
At a secret PAYD Trials Unit somewhere near Chicksands, the Contractor recently announced that not enough cash was being made, and that the current offerings would have to be adjusted to correct this dreadful situation.
Out would go all those little extras that had been provided in a desperate attempt to get favourable reviews during the 'Trial Period', and in would come the bare minimum fare, as required by the contract, for the core menu.
The first the chaps in the OM knew of this was walking into breakfast and have to ask for orange juice instead of being able to serve themselves - out came orange cordial! At last the contractor had achieved the aim - crap food unless you were prepared full wack for the 'Big Boy's Breakfast' (I kid you not), and the OM reduced to the level of a transport cafe without the levels of cleanliness, hot showers etc.
One response to the changes compared the core menu with that required to be offered in HMP. The HMP menu, needless to say, was more attractive, healthy and contained considerably more variety than that available in the Mess.

Just a couple of comments...
1.Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) once said that life aboard ship was like being in prison, with the added prospect of drowning.
It seems that prison has gotten a lot easier since then.
2. Check out Sheriff Joe Arpaio (Maricopa County, Arizona). Now his prison is no country club!
Arpaio enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1950 to 1953.
After 5 years as a police officer, he spent 32 years with the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency).
Arpaio successfully campaigned for the office of Maricopa County Sheriff in 1992. Since then, he has successfully won re-election in 1996, 2000, and 2004 with considerable support of the county voters.
Arpaio believes that inmates should be treated as harshly as legally possible to emphasize the punishment aspect of their incarceration. Thus, upon his initial election, Arpaio began instituting the controversial changes for which he would later become noted.
Arpaio began to serve inmates surplus food (mainly outdated and oxidized green bologna) and limited meals to twice daily. Meal costs would be reduced to 90 cents per day; as of 2007 Arpaio states that he has managed to reduce costs to 30 cents per day. Certain food items were banned from the county jail, mainly coffee (which also reduced "coffee attacks" on guards), but later salt and pepper were removed from the jail (at a purported taxpayer savings of $20,000/year).
Arpaio banned smoking in the county jail. He also removed pornographic magazines (the ban was later upheld in court) and weightlifting equipment. Entertainment was limited to G-rated movies.
Chain Gangs
Shortly after taking office, Arpaio reinstituted chain gangs, the controversial form of inmate labor which had been virtually eliminated in the United States.
Arpaio believes that chain gangs are not a form of punishment, but of rehabilitation. Inmates who are low-risk but with a history of jail incidents can apply to serve as free labor. Inmates work eight-hours a day, six days a week (Sundays off), mainly outside. The inmates wear traditional black-and-white striped uniforms with a cap to protect against the desert heat. Inmates perform such tasks as creating fire breaks, removing trash, and burying deceased indigent persons in the county cemetery.
Arpaio also expanded the chain gang concept by instituting the world's first female chain gang. Female inmates work seven hours a day (7 AM to 2 PM), six days a week. Arpaio has also instituted the world's first all-juvenile chain gang.
Tent City
The most noted, and controversial, of Arpaio's ideas was the set-up of "Tent City" as an extension of the Maricopa County Jail.
When Arpaio took office, inmates were routinely being released early due to overcrowding. Arpaio believed that "courts, not head count" should determine when an inmate is released, and that no officer should be deterred from making an arrest for fear that the inmate would be released due to jail overcrowding.
However, a new jail would have cost Maricopa County taxpayers around US$70 million. So instead, Arpaio obtained used tents from the military, and established Tent City in a parking lot adjacent to one of the jail facilities. As an announcement to future inmates that they should not expect early release upon overcrowding, but more tents instead, Arpaio added a (pink neon) "Vacancy" sign to the outside of Tent City. The original sign was destroyed in an inmate riot, but was quickly replaced. A second Tent City was opened in 1996 adjacent to another jail facility, and houses female inmates.
During the summer of 2003, when outside temperatures exceeded 110 °F (43 °C), which is higher than average, Arpaio said to complaining inmates, "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and the soldiers are living in tents and they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your mouths."
Tent City has been criticized by groups contending these are violations of human and constitutional rights, and simultaneously praised by those favoring Arpaio's "get tough on crime" approach.

The two meals a day cost has gone up to 43cents, and the 'VACANCY' sign is blue neon.
Other than that, spot on.
Sheriff Joe, who is a close neighbor of mine, often used the phrase...do the crime, do the time... and his methods seem to work very well indeed.
He will run again for office later this year, and I personally don't know anyone who will vote against him.
However, given the size of Maricopa county (3 million folks) there must be at least...half a dozen.

High Wycombe Mess....
Food was quite good during the week, but awful at weekends. If served in prisons, there would be riots!
No hot water for days on end.
Power cuts...they had to bring a massive generator onsite.
Midnight roll calls to check for escapees....that was the fire alarm, usually triggered by someone "cooking" toast in their room after a trip down the pub.
Some git nicked my CD player, loaned for a livers-in party!

Get a field, surround it with razor wire, give them plastic sheets and bung them in the compound.
