A beatiful and evocative photograph. Kudos to the artist.
A point or an observation if you like, do any of the more romantic posters who criticize political leaders past and present ever wonder what our national air threats are now?
How many Lighting, Phantoms, Typhoons do we need now?
Who is the air threat to the UK now?
I know that this is an emotive and subjective subject.
But sometimes I wonder where the sense of perspective has gone.
There are no fleets of Migs and Sukhoi's threatening our sky's any more.

I spent many a teenage hour in the sixties watching Lightnings doing their stuff across the river at Leconfield and can still hear and almost feel the noise.Magnificent! Then used to pop down to Binbrook when I returned to the area in the eighties, just to take me back in time!

Totally agree with all others congratulating you on a stunning photo. I would also like a Hi Res version and think the idea of a donation to a charity is a great idea and I will certainly contribute. How about the ' Help for Heroes' campaign set up for our injured servicemen and women with the aim of improving the facilities at Headley Court?

You know, there were so many exercises, the Facists even called an Active Edge on the night of my Leaving do at the Rugby Club. Fortunately, I had the good sense to book leave: I headed for Block 7 in me toga, and everyone else headed the other way in DPM

Excellent photo, was XR728 visible? I assume it's undercover in one of the buildings (or am I getting my XRs mixed up?)

Apologies for not fulfilling any of my early promises on this thread.
I've been stacked with work this week, but I WILL post a link to a hi-res version of the photo, I WILL scan the HDR article I mentioned and I WILL reply to the maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaany PMs I've received.

Apologies for the delay with this - been waiting for my chum to give me access to his Flickr account again.
I'm not familiar with Flickr, so try this for size and let me know if it's OK:

Regarding charity donations for use of the image, it's completely up to you. However, if you do wish to make a donation, then please consider this small charity which is of very personal siginifcance to me...

To help us keep a rough track of where our donations are coming from on the JustGiving web page, please can you just put 'For photograph 1' in the comments section, when prompted.

Thanks very much Harrogate,
Seeing that image again at a larger scale makes one notice the remarkable way the clouds have formed themselves as to frame the top of the tail so (unless there's some jiggery-pokery going on there; beautiful, in any regard!)

It's just a bit of haloing. It's an undesirable side effect you get when creating an HDR image, but I quite liked how it looked here so I left it alone.
Like you say, it gives a nice framing effect.
