Where are they now...
Anybody thought about keeping a running commentary as to where the Red Fleet is? Would that be allowed? I mean if they know they are being watched by NATO forces what is the harm on posting the info. here? If it's covered by the OSA then I apologise for my naive curiosity.
What would the protocol be for such a large force sailing through the Straits of Gib'?

Given that the Russian Navy knows where it is then their position can hardly be secret. Mind you HMS Nottingham only thought she knew where she was viz a viz the rock.
It really depends on how the position is dervived and the Peter Ustinov

O I C....
I'd have thought Old Admiral Whathisnameski would have been briefed prior to 'stoking up the heat blooms' and storming around the Kola Penninsula as to what reconnaisance resources might be ranged against him.
NATO might have left it's backyard unattended for a few years but I don't think The Red Banner Northern Fleet believes for one second that NATO could have run down it's forces to the extent that it couldn't bolt that particular gate shut-to if it really had to.
Surely any 'new' surveillance assets & methods regardless of how superdooper and high tech' wouldn't be overtly revealed and their results would be put down to more traditional methods...which means there must surely be some overt shadowing.NATO/Russia Strategic relationships dictate that we deploy our forces to observe theirs & vice versa.
Anybody know where the Fleet is?
Answers on a postcode to COMSUBLANT, NORTHWOOD (although that may become RNR CLUB, FLEETWOOD to pay for the new Carriers)

My wife has left me as I have been spending too much time on the road lately and I have not been paid properly. Things are really desperate. I do not know what has happend. I used to have such a good life with foreign holidays all around the world and my wife and I made so many friends. We even used to go and stay with them. Now we have no money and have to travel on Ryanair (oh the shame!). No-one wants to know us anymore. My good friend Mr Wong down at the local chinese does not even want my business anymore and has struck up a relationship with Ivan and Buck. I am reduced to eating at the local Kebab shop with Omar and Ahmed but I don't really trust them. Every time I walk in everyone stops and stares. I think they like my money but not my company.
What do you all think I should do? I would so much like to do more work for the community but I am at a loss. I think I will ring the Citizens Advice Bureau!
The Fleet
Things have just got worse..my neighbour, Cyril has just bought himself a Bugatti Veyron, totally impractical and I know he cannot afford it as he has not been getting paid either. He says that it goes really fast but the point is, he has lots of kids who he needs to get around to school and the various clubs. His only other transport is a clapped out 740 Volvo which has just failed it's MOT. He has a number of other classic cars but nothing that is suitable as family transport. I told him that he needs to get a minibus and that if he was interested, we could share the cost, that way we could get everyone on the estate around. He said that it is far too slow and he could do shuttle runs with the kids in his Veyron or in the Volvo. I am not sure if I would like my kids in that car though. Percy , up the road has a similar problem although he has lots more kids. He is not fussed about how he gets around and even travels with the great unwashed on public transport. That does cause problems however, as they are regularly to be seen waiting in the rain at the bus stop and are always late for Cubs and Brownies. Cyril usually gives them a wave though as he speeds past splashing water all over their boots (shame they are not waterproof and have holes in the soles)
I think the minibus idea is a good one. Of course it is not fancy or glamorous like the Veyron, but I think it is very practical. It is large enough to get all the kids around in one trip. Cyril's son can use it to maintain his go-kart when he goes racing at the weekend, we could load it up with the roof rack and go camping together and even go on holiday somewhere nice. I have bought an awning and a little mini washing machine to go in it so we can have all the comforts of home and when camping, we will have space to entertain as well. I think with this minibus, we might be able to get some of our friends back, that we miss so much. I don't know if the wife will come along though as she is filing for Divorce and the CSA are on my back.

I remember many years back the Ruskies used to do this every xmas time and basically piss off the maratine fleet of the RAF and always see if we were awake at Xmas with constant ops flying. Think the word on the street is it will pass close to the UK this weekend

GIUK gap around breakfast Saturday give or take the odd sortie.
Will 12 MRA4 be able to hack it?

Statoil/Hydro stopped all helicopter flights to/from their intallations on the Troll oil and gas fields 2 days ago. (Some reports allso say to the Statfjord field)
The Russians was making the most of "Due regard", and sailed close to the rigs without any coordination, launching both fighters and helicopters according to the media. (Class E airspace above 1500ft) No transponders on the russian aircraft naturally, so the offshore sector of Stavanger ATCC could do little to help.

Going Off Topic slighly but the Ukrainians sold the other 'newer' Kuznetsov class carrier "Varyag" to China under a contract that it will never be refitted for combat operations and be used as a floating casino and at a mere price of just $20m. The Turkish would not let the carrier pass through into the Med Sea until 2001 when her rudders and everything else had been taken off. (she was then towed to China)
Why would a country buy a large 68,000 ton carrier and never use it for combat operations?
According to recent photos, China has painted the Varyag in the usual Chinese Warship Combat Operations colours and it is under tight security and covered a lot of the time.
What would happen if China did break that contract and refit it for Combat Ops? As it seems they are going ahead with something other than a Casino!

Maybe they'll operate Blackjacks from it?
I can't see China being too bothered about breaking the contract, its not as if Ukraine has other assets that China might want.

Ecce Homo! Loquitur...
According to Janes Fighting Ships the Varyag has been renamed the "Shi Lang". Shi Lang was the Chinese admiral who conquered Taiwan.......

Oh well, while our eyes have been diverted courtesy of Dubya to the Middle East, the Russians have nicely got themselves back up. What people tend to dismiss as a hasbeen superpower is in reality a revitalised and hungry superpower-in-the-wings. I've been looking that bit further east and north than Eye-rak, and to be honest it's no surprise the Reds are up and steaming. The stuff they've scrapped is decades old, noisy and rusty, but just wait til you see the new St Petersburg class subs. Independent Air Cells, underwater missiles, the full biz.
Do we ever learn? Sadly not...

I would imagine she will be used as a crew training facility rather than operationally. It takes years of training put put a full sized carrier to sea, even the Russian have struggled for years. Even if the whole thing is just a ruse, it would certainly keep the American's guessing. If its not a ruse, they have to start a training programme now. My understanding was that Varyag was 70% complete when construction stopped. Lots of cheap labour can scrape off the rust and you are off.
Interesting vid on Kusnetsov Here.
The Sukhoi looks pretty cool compared to what we have to offer. But they could do with a bit more deck landing practice. The radar kit - well that's 1970s stuff.
Missed the Udaloy taking well green. Surprised its still afloat. Russian ships are useless in heavy seas, ours though were much better even though they were smaller.

Quirky choice of music towards the end of the video - sounded like a jazzed-up version of the title music from 'Das Boot'.

The most frightening thing about this is that it was on YouTube and it was rather good. Can you imagine their airships aloowing a crash in an official video?
Navaleye, remember the Google Earth pic in St Petersburg? The vessel next to the Udaloj is still afloat even with its stern underwater.
