New Air Commodore Post
Todays Telegraph announces a new post for a one star of Director Continuous Improvement and Support in the Defence Equipment and Support organisation. Is this just one more job for the big boys or a genuine chance to put some power behind the need for progress on many important issues?.

With the RAF reducing (reduced?) to around 41,000 just what will the ratio of air rank officers to non-air rank personnel be?

When the RAF drops much below 40,000 personnel, I think you may well then find that question to be irrelevant.

I would have gladly tried some "Continuous Improvement" during my SEngO tour, and would have been ecstatic to receive some "Support" from the IPT. Unfortunately, I spent my tour trying to cope with the numerous adverse effects of increasing tasking combined with reducing manpower. And as for support from the IPT, they were too busy trying to cope with the devastating cuts being imposed on them to provide anything approaching an acceptable level of support.
Let's hope this Air Cdre can sort everything out. And assuming he's not a one-man-band, I wonder how many Gp Capts and SO1/2/3 posts will also be created?

Excellent, More chiefs for the indians to report to. In triplicate with the red and green striped ink on polka dot paper. It was due last week.
Oh and you are out of date rafft, ccs, irt, have 2000 hours of work backlogged onto JPA, have not been paid, your quarter is falling down and you are due out in the 'stan in 36 hours.
If you couldn't take a joke you shouldn't have joined......
Sorry Mr Torpy, I didn't realise I'd joined a circus. Where do I collect my clown boots and spinning bow tie??

I find the idea of there being 2 sqns worth of Group Captains kicking about, almost hysterical.
LEAN is a complete crock. Civvy companies smirk when its mentioned now, but just as the military was late taking it onboard, so it'll be late getting rid of it.. well, until a fresh batch of scrapers looking for a career project wise up to the possibilities of course.

Maybe we should lean the RAF as a whole so that the influence of the ever-growing strata of filtering between the left hand and the right hand (comprising Sqn Ldrs, Wg Cdrs and Gp Capts all battling for careers) could be removed.
3 Air Chf Mshl
9 Air Mshl
25 AVM
82 Air Cdre
258 Gp Capt
1265 Wg Cdr
2559 Sqn Ldr
4261 Flt Lt
386 Fg Off
65 Plt Off
872 OCdt
1 Chpln Chf
1 Prncpl Chpln
23 Revd (Wg Cdr)
32 Revd (Sqn Ldr)
5 Revd (Flt Lt)
Not counting the OCdt, the total is 8975, so in a force of 40,000, almost 1 in 4 is an Officer, and each Officer has an average of 3 people to 'manage'.
With 62 Revd ranks, means each sqn could have a couple of Reverends each.!!!
For balance have a look at the latest DASA Stats which includes all ranks (and if you can be bothered to search their site it has all sorts of other interesting facts (!), including VO stats (previously known as PVR))
Do we really have 1150 WO/MACR?
Sadly, because of JPA (what else!) the latest Army stats are not available. However, the Navy stats are there - surprising to see that even as a smaller Service than the RAF they have more Senior Officers than Junior.
