I'm a regular user of facebook because i find it's a good way to keep up with mates all around the country as a result of being in the air force.
However, i've recently found out i'm going somewhere hot and sandy for the rest of the winter and someone mentioned that it was a bad idea to be on there (and also a bad idea if you haven't done the A course yet) because people can potentially find out too much about you.
Is it such a bad idea or can you do things to make it as safe as possible?

rororbrake - given the amount of info that can be gleaned from the internet it's a moot point whether a bit more would make any difference. Personally I'd make sure you have enough 9/7.62 insurance about your pink and soft when you go about your work!

Back on topic, isn't publication of personal details when in HMF just a bad idea from start to finish? There's enough "official" info eg Army/RAF List, MOD websites etc out there, without adding to it.

Good point roadster, that's why i asked the question, but you also need to have a life as well, i was just wondering if anyone (possibly from St Mawgan etc) knew if it was really dangerous or weather a professional who's looking for stuff on you will get it anyway!

First of all, it has to be assumed that you haven't put anything online that you aren't prepared to live with. If that is the case, then the advice when I was last involved was that you should know what was online about you.
One thing you can do is to be realistic about the threat - the type of threat you are talking about ie extraction of mil info under duress. Is that a current threat given your working conditions and the theatre of ops you are in?
Thereafter, assuming the worst has happened, what this type of threat involves is trying to find a weakness in you, to exploit, open up and get you talking.
If you know that your interogator has found out about your fishing habits, your passion for knitting tea cosies and your delight for 'going out of your way to tread on crunchy leaves' (a genuine facebook group) because they are all on your facebook profile - then potentially you win that round. He is trying to convince you that he knows everything about you, in fact you know all he has is your facebook profile. Solution - regular Google checks on yourself, etc to find out what is in the public domain about you. Then you know what info to worry about and what not to.

I'd be more worried about the photos people might put up of you. Thank heavens for the remove tag button. People can't generally see your profile if you're not friends with them - but if you poke them or you have an activity in common with them, for example, they can get access that way.
