Four Ship Tac Formation?

Saw from some distance today a 4 ship formation comprising a central pair fairly close together(fighting wing?) with the other 2 a/c either side in a more traditional battle position ..A AA A..Get my gist? Whats that all about then? Also is the Typhoon allowed to fly proper low level? Every time I see them they are mincing along at 2-3000' at very gentle speeds. I see plenty of other fast jets hooning around in my neck of the woods, so why not the Typhoon?

Just guessing:

Air Defence fighter
Look down shoot down
Keep out of the weeds avoids bullets and gives a good view.

They will tell you Eagles soar.

Only Interceptors need to fly at Warp speed.

Thats escort. Perspective makes it look a bit odd at times and it can get a bit squiffy if they are reacting to a threat. Sometimes the formation is down to what the 'fighters' want eg if they are trialling something or other. As for the Typhoon, I expect that it is cleared low level but is not working up in that role yet so you might not see many low levelling at the mo.

I'm guessing that Typhoon isn't seen much at low-level in case of a birdstrike, can't imagine it would be able to take much of an impact with all those composites etc....

Maybe it was supposed to be 'wall-4' but the number three had dodgy eyes and didn't want to go blind on #2. i.e

4......3..2......1

Or maybe #3 had taken a reaming from some angry QWI about going blind so flies 0.15nm battle instead of 1.5. Not that that ever happened to me.........

Typhoon has been photographed in Wales down the loop and various other places quite a few times this year and very low level.

Guessing like that gets the **** shot out of you by every SAM and MANPAD going. Who needs a good view of the AMRAAM dropping into the cockpit of the target?

True but I was assuming cold war DCA mission, given that it is a cold war fighter.

Friendly airspace, hostile air threat.

As sweep or escort you are quite right.

We have had a few bird strikes on Typhoon's, nothing worse than a red smudge and that lovely odour though. No real damage as yet! [touch wood]
