New NATO Strategy
FT: New threats push Nato to revise strategy The Nato alliance, stretched by operations in Afghanistan, should further expand its role to include counter-terrorism, cyber-security and the security of natural resources, according to a classified document to be endorsed by presidents and prime ministers next week......
Main priorities seem to be counter-terrorism, cyber-security and urban warfare. Two points I find of interest are:
...."Nato defence ministers want 40 per cent of the alliance’s land forces to be available for overseas missions."
and
“the ability. . . to identify hostile elements, including in urban areas, in order to conduct operations in a way that minimises unintended damage as well as to the risk to our own forces”.
I´m not sure that 3 x C-17s is going to go along way towards the first.
As for the second, non-lethal weapons? More special forces?

'The Nato alliance, stretched by operations in Afghanistan...'
NATO is hardly stretched....it is only that the vast majority of nations do c**k all and watch the few nations that will do something.....
When did Belgium last do anything meaningful?

General question but how do Journos get to see

Can't be that secret then can it
All of those functions listed are currently mostly the responsibility of the nation state involved, maybe some of the smaller countries want access to the big boys SF toys?

Remember The Sun's "explosive exposé" (page-filler) about the "secret" (RESTRICTED) "anti-terror plans" (list of contacts) found "discarded" (misplaced) by a "top Army officer" (Major)? The meeja do like to inflate their stories.
