Having spent 18 glorious (and wind swept) months there almost 30 years ago I can thoroughly recommend the place if walking, bird life and solitude floats your boat. My very own Unit Enquiry after an episode with a Land Rover and loose wheel nuts 10 days after the LR's visit to MTSS. Four boat journeys for a hair cut if you could be bothered, three days snowed in on Norwick hill and the SAC medic castrating the CO's Labrador so the next incumbent would adopt him (the dog not the medic). Happy days. The sub-aqua diving exped back there some 10 years later is best left forgotten however; 'we counted them all out - it was a worrying long time till we counted them all in again!'
"....the SAC medic castrating the CO's Labrador...."
Did you condone such an act of cruelty, or did you charge the bastard and report him to the RSPCA? And the CO, if it was his idea...

The airfare to the northern islands from London is approx £370. Airfare to Orlando is £317. Some choice. Then again, you probably won't get mugged at Saxa Vord. Probably won't get raped there either. Come to think of it there is probably no sex there whatsoever. Brass Monkey theory explained later.
Don't knock it til you've tried it!
I did 14 months up there in 88/89. Loved it. In mid summer you could go to Happy Hour, drink til midnight, get MT to take you down to the local Voe (lake!), set up the BBQ in the sunshine, cool the wine in the water and fish for Trout all night. Delicious. About 0730, MT would pick us up again and take us back to the Mess for breakfast. Kip all day.
Brought the brand new Mrs Wyler up there mid tour and...er...did not go out much after that. Mid winter, dark all day, not worth getting out of bed.

SSPCA mate - your version don't operate here. Perhaps the dog got his own back and bit the SAC's bo**ox off in return! (Doesn't sound like he had much use for them up there anyway - the local sheep population would undoubtedly have then been left unmolested.)
