As a serving airman aircrew you should know what is happening...... blah blah blah
The Times and Daily Telegraph both have internet sites and they are very good for having a browse on. I found it quite helpful to cut and paste articles into a folder so that I could build up a reference section ie. a folder on Europe, a folder on political developments etc. This builds up to a handy reference tool and you can print it out for revising.
Good luck!

For defence related news, although with an American slant there is
http://www.globalsecurity.org/
http://www.fas.org/main/home.jsp
To be honest you can do a lot worse than bbc.co.uk or http://www.timesonline.co.uk/global/
