We really are lucky to have kept our heritage intact on this little bundle of islands.
Thank goodness we still have the Crown. God forbid that our people should ever be expected to touch their forelocks to El Presidente Bliar
The Taffs did very well, particularly when considering that they've been East of Suez until quite recently.
I totally agree. Well done to all involved both in the parade, fly-past and supporting roles. I can well imagine all the effort and work that had to go into putting on such superb tribute to Her Majesty.

The Royal Air Force wishes Her Majesty a happy 80th birthday.

I got involved once in the flypast, worked bloody hard and gave up a lot of my free time to help to make it perfect on the day. And I didn't begrudge a single moment. I would go to the ends of the earth for my Sovereign and those of you who want to save pennies or live in a republic I suggest you bu**er off and live somewhere else - I hear France has a lot of empty places to populate.

Most of the people in this country recognise the stability and prosperity that the Sovereign brings to us and are grateful.

So those of you who winge and moan about cost, overstretch, environment, et al, dry up and get over it.

It may have been onerous for the people involved but it went down well with the public in St James' Park who seemed to enjoy it - and yes the Red Arrows got cheers and applause.

No Harriers because of the single engine rule....but Hurricanes and Spitfires are okay then?

Just proves there is some commonsense left....no one complained about them sixty-some years ago so why should they complain today?

The Reds have exemption from the single engine over built-up areas rule due to their role. They were good, weren't they? Really made a hit with the public when the smoke came on. Made me proud. Hope the whingers felt something stirring too!

It's interesting that for a few years now, there has been a vociferous and justified attack on the erosion of the quality of life in the Services due to the proliferation of bean-counters, middle managers, lean initiatives, investing in paper etc, etc. and a general lack of traditional leadership, obviously designed to create the Royal Air Force PLC - CEO A Blair Esq.

How refreshing then, to see something that must make everyone of these bureaucratic, faceless gnomes, absolutely impotent with frustration when forced to provide support to this activity that has no deliverables, no metrics and little opportunity for continuous process improvement. Instead it brings a sense of pride to millions, genuine joy to Her Majesty, and reminds all of us about "esprit de corps" in a unique manner. It shows the world that DESPITE overstretch, under manning and Wal-Mart management, the Services will always remain professional, dedicated and loyal.

Every individual who supported any aspect of today's events should be very proud of a job well done. To begrudge the weekends, late nights and continuous rehearsals that go in to this, is to forget what signing an oath of allegiance really means, and lends support to those same faceless bureaucrats that will not be happy until they have created the Royal Air Force PLC - CEO A Blair Esq.

Apologies for being a bit of a fence-sitter.

Warning - May contain traces of nuts.

Two's in...

You have just about summed up what the vast majority of Armed Forces personnel feel about our Queen and the politicians who drive us.

Your sentiments are clearly a reflection as to how American society views their own Forces - with pride and gratitude.

I wish I'd said what you just said - it encapsulates my feelings exactly!

And I really wish you'd remove your fence-sitting apology and warning - your post certainly DOES NOT contain nuts!

Thank you.

I rushed with boyish excitement to Regent's Park during my lunch break just in time to see the BBMF arriving over the trees. I witnessed the whole flypast, which was very satisfying. Then I stepped in something soft.
(it happens apparently.)

Thanks boys and girls!

One had the whole assemblage over the site of Fairlop airfield exiting en route to Her Maj right over my parent's house! Lovely. The BBMF were there first, of course, at 12:45 and did THREE whole holding circuits.

One was v. honoured to get a better ringside seat than at the Palace, although the Dead Sparrows didn't do the smokey bit for me......

Video of some of the flypast courtesy of the BBC here.

Can't post the actual link, but it's about half-way down the front page.

I am led to believe that they were too busy. A shame the BBC didn't say as much (apologies if they did, but I doubt it).

I didn't hear them say so, mind you did hear them say it was a formation of "vintage" aircraft when it showed the tonka's.
