US plane crashes in Albania

bbc.co.uk
31st March 05

A US military plane with nine people on board has crashed in central Albania.
There are believed to be no survivors in the crash near the town of Gramsh, some 80km (50 miles) south-east of Tirana, Albanian officials say.

The plane hit a mountain after apparently flying too low in the uninhabited region, reports say.

The aircraft was taking part in joint exercises with the Albanian military, an Albanian defence ministry spokesman told the Associated Press news agency.

The incident occurred at about 2000 local time (1800 GMT), with local villagers speaking of hearing a loud explosion.

The Albanian News24 television station reported that the crash site was hard to reach, adding that a helicopter war seen circling the area.

The Headline actually said a 'jet' had crashed...

Just heard it on Fox News, a C-130 apparently. Another sad day. I hope beyond reason that there will be survivors.

Awaiting further news.

It is being reported that it is an American C-130 that was based at Mildenhall, UK. Of the nine people missing, four bodies have been found.

RIP. Not good times for the Herc community.

A sad loss of crew. This is the fourth MC-130H to be lost in the past three years. Serial 84-0475 and 90-0161 were lost in 2002. Serial 85-0012 was lost in 2004.
