RVR Limits

Yellow SUN

The BLEU trials at RAE Bedford were all made with a single channel system and the aircraft involved were Varsity ( main workhorse), Vulcan, Canberra, Comet, and DC.7. We regularly searched out airfields, mainly American, which we knew to be socked in with fog so that we could assess their approach lighting.

In my article 'The night London Airport was mine' which was carried out in a Varsity (No auto throttle) the RVR was 45 Feet...Feet. In freezing fog. No lights were seen until after landing and then only one at a time ( Centre line). Having carried out well over a thousand auto landings I had complete confidence in the system, but of course one realises that for Civil operation more security is a must...And anyway how would you navigate back to dispersal. The main difficulty on this night was how to get back to the take off point...Thanks Ground control radar.
