Everyone:
A serious topic deserves a serious response......
I think one’s reaction to this sort of tragedy depends very much on one’s age.
Aircrew in WWII did not expect to survive one tour on ops let alone several.
If you joined the RAF in the 50’s there was a good chance that you would be killed in a flying accident. That was just a matter of fact. There were literally hundreds of accidents each year. If you had any common sense you accepted this. When you lost a mate of course it was sad but it was not unusual.
Today (in war or peace) so few aircrew are killed each year that every event comes as a terrible shock to those who have not experienced those earlier days. We should recognise this and not question what they do or say.

I Did Not Die
Do not stand at my grave and forever weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and forever cry.
I am not there. I did not die.
All the best buddy, hope to see you again sometime.
Paul

God Bless
My thoughts to all at Lyneham, and especially to those out in theatre at the present time. No words can express what we are feeling.
I shall be raising a glass tonight for those who have left us, and lighting candles to remember you by. Families, friends and colleagues are in my prayers.
God Bless you all.

Whatever nine brave blokes from Lyneham went to Iraq to do, it wasn't to kill. Certainly not to kill directly. Many would have the very highest motives - doing their duty to their country, and putting their lives on the line to make the world a better safer place.
And while criticism of the war might lead some particpants to be defensive, most would privately admit to grave misgivings that any innocent bystanders have lost their lives, and perhaps even to regret that so many enemy lives have been lost.
It's only natural, however, that they should be moved to express their condolences (and even grief) on a thread in the PPRuNe military forum when nine of their number die in a single incident.
Most aircrew (the vast majority) are highly intelligent blokes (often slightly right of centre politically) and to imply that they're cold blooded killers who should somehow deserve to 'kill or be killed' is ignorant and stupid, and is extremely insensitive in these circumstances.
Most of those here are extremely tolerant of outsiders who have any kind of sympathy, empathy or interest in, or knowledge of military aviation - even journos. I'd gently suggest that you haven't demonstrated those characteristics, and that you should expect an angry response. You're lucky that no-one has pointed out that the lowliest, youngest ALM on No.47 Squadron is worth a dozen of you or I.

I am so disgusted at the inappropriate posting by this prick moosp that I can barely contain my anger. This is purely a time for condolences and prayers for those poor unfortunates who will not be coming home to their familes and friends.
What goes around comes around moosp, so fly safe.

My condolances
My condolences to all affected by this accident, and thank you for doing your part to keep my family safe.
In my opinion it is short sighted to be so opposed to the actions taken against Iraq. Saddam Hussein was told many times over to open up for inspections by the U.N. He never complied, and based upon the information available at the time, war was initiated.
If he had let inspections be carried out there would have been no reason for the U.S. and Britain to take action. Saddam Hussein started this war, not the U.S.
Consider it this way. Your company says "Fly to London to pick up a load", and you decide to go to Paris instead. Would you be held responsible for your decision? If you do not agree with this argument the entire U.N. needs to be shut down, it is nothing but a waste of time and money.

MOOSP's post has been deleted by PPP [thanks to him]. I've now deleted mine as irrelevant.
My thoughts and condolences to those RAF and Army families suffering the aftermath of this tragedy.

Well said Jacko. At least somebody is able to show the appropriate respect due.
MOOSP, I think you have just managed to instantly alienate yourself on this forum. Well done for being so insensitive

Horrible news...
Lots of former colleagues and former studes of mine from Finningley at Lyneham - I dread the release of the names.
My sincerest condolences go out to all those who have lost loved ones, and thoughts and prayers for those who continue to fly the flag on behalf of all of us Brits worldwide.
Without a doubt, the world's best truckies, in the finest tradition.

Oh dear, I thought moosp has a point! Air Pig , with all his overdone crying faces, doesn't show respect, he cheapens those mens' deaths even more. This is not about lack of respect. This is about those of you that go way over the top. I've lost two pilot friends (one military) in tragic circumstances. They weren't British though, so I guess it doesn't matter.
sad day indeed
It's a sad day indeed for all at Lyneham & out in the far east,
my thoughts are with all of you guys & gals - I met a lot of you when I was seconded to Lyneham a few years back -
please let me know where the families support contributions can be sent to
PER ARDUA AD ASTRA

Sorry to cut in on the condolences:
Media are now saying insurgents are claiming the Herc as a shoot-down. Doesn't change anything re the dead and is probably terorist propaganda anyway.
I'm not up on the RAF Sqns so don't know if this (47 Sqn) was a spec ops Herc, or however they are referred to. If it was, there probably won't be much more detail forth-coming.
Sincere condolences to the families.

What moron merged these threads........page after page of respect for lost friends now tainted by the inane postings of "moose tw@t"..........I am utterly astounded!!!
all spelling mistakes are "df" alcohol induced
Polite note:
This moron merged the posts. Something we always do as a matter of fact. However, that doesn't stop us removing disrespectful posts or those that are inane or just plain insensitive. To prove the point I have spent the past 20 minutes or so doing that and I will continue to do so. PPP

Why have these two topics been merged? True heart felt messages now mixed with ramblings of an insensitive idiot.
Shame on you PPRUNE
Edited:
PPRUNE thank you for deleting that moosp idiot's views. I am ashamed that the human race can sometimes be so very low. That said, these threads should never have been merged.
