From the Times:

....station commander, said: “This incident could have been much worse but for the training that we regularly undertake for situations such as this.”
You train for this? Skipper and I nearly fell off our chairs laughing.

Engine vibration indications followed by the appropriate Red Card drills.......followed by a diversion to an unknown airfield and and a 3 engine approach...........sounds like a standard sim ex to me

So I guess maybe we do train for this sort of sitch ....hope you are still sat comfortably

Perhaps not the page to post it, but the RNZAF in fact had an option on the C130J alongside the RAAF purchase, but declined!

Sliding back 'on topic' - I'd LOVE to hear what damage the Mig suffered! Hopefully not insignificant

Having moved from the secret base in wiltshire, to a completely different secret base in Lincs, I've sort of lost track of what goes on back down south. Being a blunt Ops type, I'm not that interested in inter-type banter and am just glad the only thing that got dented was the frame. Whoever the crews was, good to hear you got all got down safe!

Broken,

Good point, well made. Was more concerned about a Mig passing six inches from certain death!

..............yes, but just suppose the Mig 'totalled' itself in the encounter......................

How's that for a 'last trip' in a Herc?

Would that count as a 'kill'? I never thought of the C-130 in the OCA role, but...

Could have been a new version of the old joke:

Q. What's the difference between a P-3 and an F-3

A. The P-3’s the only one with a confirmed kill . . . . .

Danger

On the question of training for such instances, I used to launch "fighters" directly at crews in the Sim so the answer's "yes".
My swansong was to Bucharest as well....!
Well done and good luck to all the crew, the Mig pilot probably returned to the crew room very quietly and muttered something about a bird strike at low level before downing a large glass of pure alcohol!!

Bucharest

Swansong - what's that?
Me - 3 different squadrons at secret wilts airbase and my 'swansongs' were Akronellini twice and the last one a PTS lunchstop at Brize!
Tho' there are other possibilities, I put it down to a combination of poor planning by the sect ldr and short-notice postings!

Went to Bucharest once in 'the old days'. Stayed in what supposedly an up-market spot called the Parc Hotel - it was an obvious anagram - should have been called the CR@P Hotel! One of our party got stung by a Bureau de Change to the tune of £100 and we all got arrested in the hotel next door's swimming pool by the fun-police. Hope things are much better these days.
