RAF C130 lands safely after mid-air collision

A lucky escape. Though if they're stuck in Baku for any length of time they might disagree:yuk:

A RAF Hercules aircraft has been involved in a mid-air collision in the Middle East.
The Hercules C130J from RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire, was on a routine sortee between Kabul and Bucherest when the collision took place.

C130 collision

I heard a rumour the other day about this but it seemed people were keeping infomation close to their chest.

Glad to hear that everyone got back safe and sound although i don't think the same could be said for the crew's underwear.

Anyone know anymore info ?

betty_boo_x 26th May 2004 06:57

Thank goodness they're all alright. Was the TCAS not working? What happened to the unidentified "other" aircraft? Glad everyones safe. The story made national news in these parts this morning.

10forcash 26th May 2004 08:12

Apparently they were 'buzzed' by two MiG's, three holes in the leading edge of one wing and a prop blade embedded in the fuselage....apparently......
Bet there was someone somewhere kicking an embassy's back door in the next day:p
Cheers,

<<if they're stuck in Baku for any length of time they might disagree>>
They can have a look at what 80 years of Communism did to a once beautiful city, revel in high-sulphur diesel exhaust, listen to the locals moaning about Armenia and have a beer - Oh and buy the wife a nice stylish woollen coat :D

Well done getting it on the ground esp with er, unfamiliar ATC.

OKOC 26th May 2004 11:26

TCAS do nay work if the other f:mad: er ain't swarking-or
amarangue?

10forcash 26th May 2004 16:32

Still, I suppose there's more free drinks in the mess on this story than sucking an eagle into the engine or tw@tting a wingtip on KIA tower.......
cheers,

Well done everyone and say what you like but everyone is around to tell the tale. Whats needed is more eyes out of the pointy end. You could employ all those Hitler Youth stuck in training holds to train their beady eyes on Johnny Foreigner. Could help eating all those horror boxes too.

Ian Corrigible 26th May 2004 18:32

The locals are denying anything happened (here's a clue chaps: the aircraft involved is the one with a newly installed dog-tooth in the wing...)

Turkmen officials deny British military plane collision in Turkmen airspace
ASHGABAT, May 26 (AFP)

Officials in Turkmenistan on Wednesday rejected a British defence ministry announcement that a British military transport plane had collided with another aircraft in the Central Asian country's airspace.

"We would know if there was such an incident and we've received no such information," a spokesman for Turkmenistan's civil defence service told AFP.

The denial was echoed by a spokesman for the national flag carrier Turkmen Airlines. "Nothing like that has happened in our territory," the Turkmen Airlines spokesman said.

The hardline leadership of Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov has generally kept a tight lid on any information it sees as reflecting badly on the country.

It doesn't get any closer!

All I can say is that I'm glad I can buy the guys a drink on my bar bill rather than drinking off theirs. Welcome home chaps!

Always_broken_in_wilts 26th May 2004 23:52

Betty:rolleyes:

"Whats needed is more eyes out of the pointy end. You could employ all those Hitler Youth stuck in training holds to train their beady eyes on Johnny Foreigner"....What utter dog droppings:rolleyes:

With a closing speed of " warp factor lots" and lack of a squawk a whole flight deck full of eyes would have made **** all differance.............lets just be thankfull it all ended as it did without opening up the usual inter frame banter:ok:

all spelling mistakes are "df" alcohol induced

Turkmen officials deny British military plane collision in Turkmen airspace

so that's where the Iraqi information minister went......

Always-Ranting-In-Wilts
Now listen here fruitcake, I am as glad as the next man it all ended safely(please read my previous).
Please stop being so sensitive and looking for conflict where none exists.
Accidents happen and thank heavens everyone is alright,as everyone agrees. I too would gladly buy the guys a beer, than drink on their bar bill.
Raise a glass to them and our DIFFERENCES. Whats with this inter-frame rubbish you allude to? Please please lets not start another one of those.
You could start by looking at your duty free consumption as the ingrained drinking culture is affecting your Tourettes syndrome and your spelling.
Please please please try to keep this lighthearted and join in the "banter"so often alluded to,or is it truly beyond you?
Should you take 1 hot flask or 2? How is life at the cutting edge? What do the crew like best PG or Assam? Would you ask them when you stroll in today?

Mr C Hinecap 27th May 2004 10:57

Betty - think 'tis you that needs a hug. This time (only once, mind) I concur with ABIW. Even as one who spends most C130 time loading/unloading or sleeping, I can see that extra eyes aren't going to help much/at all in this situation. ABIW was pretty light-hearted in his response. Anyhoo.......

from the Sun

A HERO RAF pilot saved the lives of 20 British soldiers when he landed his plane safely after a mid-air collision with a fighter jet.

The giant Hercules transporter was clipped by a MiG at 20,000 feet over Turkmenistan.

The Russian-built jet tore six inches off the ends of two of the plane’s propeller blades.

But the pilot — flying British troops home from duty in Afghanistan — managed to land on three of his four engines in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Hercules C130J is based in RAF Lyneham, Wilts. An inquiry into the near-disaster has been launched.

I want one of those "giant Hercules transporter " aircraft.

Arkroyal 27th May 2004 11:13

Glad it turned out OK

The Hercules C130J from RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire, was on a routine sortee between Kabul and Bucherest when the collision took place.
? Is that a routine these days?

Mobile Muppet 27th May 2004 12:17

Just to slightly change the subject, I heard we have been trying to flog our C130J MK5 rubbish off to the RNZAF, and funny old thing after looking at them they came to the same conclusion as us that they are crap for most AT roles and decided against them.
Also heard they were to be replaced by some K/H models ?

RoboAlbert 27th May 2004 12:47

Ahh good attempt at diverting an interesting thread muppet. Grow up

To the guys - Nice one

however, hope SS doesn't start using it in one of his Quart sims!

;)

You better believe it! And that is only half of it.....

A HERO RAF pilot saved the lives of 20 British soldiers...blah blah blah....giant Hercules transporter.....

I stopping reading The Sun back in the 80's

Pretty Young Airgirl Knifed in Roman Orgy!!

Toga Party at the Rugby Club, knifing happened elsewhere, she wasn't pretty.

But I digress.

Is there any requirement to look out the window in the cruise? I think we should be told.

Is there a requirement to carry out a 100% stock check of Travel Scrabble tiles at 'top of drop'?

betty_boo_x 27th May 2004 16:55

As for looking out of the window in the cruise, try calling Swissair Customer Information Desk and see if they can put you in touch with Geneva Control, but I digress.
No hug for me thanks, see and avoid is the excuse at all subsequent BoE's.
Very well done to everyone concerned (again).
If the TCAS was a no hoper and you didnt see them, didnt the RWR cackle like a Loadmaster after finishing said Quart Sim ?
Second thoughts about that hug........pop round if you want
