Biggus,

I can't speak for other branches and their desk officers but the man looking after the engs is doing a good job and I know he doesn't post people without due consideration of their wishes.

RAF Moray requires a certain amount of personnel. If the RAF had that exact amount of people in the right trades and branches who want to serve in Moray it would be easy, but we don't. Its no great surprise that we don't have enough volunteers.....so some hard decisions have to be made by some quite decent officers caught between rocks and hard places.

I don't doubt that some mistakes are made, but we all put ourselves up for the mistakes by taking the shilling in the first place.......

Mad mark,

Agree entirely! Some of the longest, hottest summers of my life up at ISK.

If you want nightlife then you can eay find it in Aberdeen or Edinburgh is only a couple of hours away - That was civilisation last time I looked! Or Ba fly to london for about £70 return.

Long live ISK - I'd go back like a shot.

I have it on good authority that Lincoln would be a good place to buy a house if you live at ISK. No jock taxes if your spouse goes to work on the economy.

If you are posted to ISL don't unpack your bags. They hangar doors might fall off soon. Vale of Y also be losing an airbase. There are only so many airfields you can spread the entire Eurofighter 2008 over - ONE

A bit like paying woman who had children and left the service. You signed up to do a job if you don't like it then leave, a bit simplistic you might think but some of us just want to do the job. The service may be short of people however it could probably do with losing some of you moaning g...s. We know that there are problems and we are overstreched. If you dont want to go OOA or dont want to move then get a chit from the doc, turn down your promotion and let the people who want to do the job get it done. Moan over and out.

And your point is.......?

You can have my OOA commitment and promotion any day. Most of us are actually more than happy to do the job. It is what we signed up to do, but it isn't what our families signed up for (maybe we should have 'briefed' them better, or should all military personnel be single!)! Is it too much to ask for a bit of stability for our wives and families while we jet off around the world and put our lives at risk putting out T B Liars latest bush fire!

I've tried RAF Lincolnshire but definitely prefer ISK. No women? Then import them, dear boys - I know the gene pool is lacking up here but don't you ever go home on leave?

ISK quite often has warmest days / longest sunshine in weather reports, my dad (retired, nowt better to do) compared Isle of Wight & ISK for a good while and ISK won!

But back to the ORIGINAL thread - anyone got any good rumours on which of the 3 Scottich bases could close and why (20 minutes, 2 sheets of paper, do not use calculators)?

Al Falauncher,

All 4 dear boy, all four. Without ISL you do not need IST. Without ISK, ISL and IST you do not need RAF St Andrews either.

OTOH the air commodore would miss his trips to Balmoral via ISK.

Heard on the local news this morning that, following the de-commissioning of 800 NAS yesterday (it reforms at Cottesmore in 06 with GR7/9 - what earthly use are they to naval task forces?), ALL air bases in the UK are to be reviewed. As usual, Bliar and his team of amateurs haven't got a bl***y clue beyond the end of their (short) noses and short-termist policies (general election next year - let's bu***er-up the whole country so no-one can fix it!). Won't be long before we're sharing civil airfields and that's all we'll have. Mondays - civil, Tuesdays - military etc.

On the interesting debate of "N" vs "S", an old friend of mine is a senior officer in the German Navy. When unification occurred they appointed a large proportion of the former FGN (West) officers to posts in the East (eg Rostock) and vice-versa for the DDR folks. Nothing changes, it seems - the RN has always done it to Portsmouth and Plymouth "natives".
