Scottish Bases to Close?

Up at ISK there are various rumours as to whether ISK is to shut or could it be lossie for the chop? Anyone got an opinon?

opso 24th Mar 2004 20:10

ISK seems to be the favourite for the chop from what I've heard around the HW-net.

L J R 24th Mar 2004 20:18

If the Station Closes, maybe they will extend the R/W all the way to Ice Station Lima to allow Tristars to get there - or more to the point to take-off with a 'little' fuel. That way Lossie will remain open!!, and be more useable.

Jobza Guddun 24th Mar 2004 22:24

Get shot of both of 'em, and get Scampton and Finningley back where they belong!

Mad_Mark 25th Mar 2004 06:38

Oh dear, here we go again.

Yes, lets close the bases with some of the best flying weather, situated in some of the most open airspace and near excellent flying training areas in the UK

Just because some of you (who have probably not spent more than a couple of days in Moray) have some misguided view of the area, or are so determined that you will not like Scotland before you ever get there that it taints your attitude. Get a grip of yourselves  The Moray Firth air bases are situated in a beautiful part of the UK, the people are (on the whole) very friendly, the weather better than you'd expect, crime rates extremely low, housing affordable, leisure facilities from water sports to mountaineering and skiing. Yes you may be a long way away from your mummy and daddy, but you're in the military, get used to it and cuddle your teddy bear :ooh:

MadMark!!!

KPax 25th Mar 2004 09:24

What a good idea let's re-open Scampton. Do you have any idea how complex ATC is in that area just now. Lets add a few more squadrons and see how many more Air Trafficers we can get into trouble.

pig fist 25th Mar 2004 09:40

sense and (in)sensibility

Kpax,

Don't start all that conchy talk! If you start throwing logic at the situation who knows where we'll end up?

Anyway, everyone knows the world exists only east of the meridian (and south of Catterick) as far as some are concerned.

You wait, in a few years, when Harrier migration is all tiddly, we'll all be crammed into the MDA's desperate for control from Neat (desig Scampton) but turned down 'cos 56(R) have got a 1v1 going on. Someone will have a skeg at the UK(L)2 and say "hey, this area west of A25/N864 looks quiet - lets go fly down there". Then maybe we could stage out of a local base - one with over 9,000ft of concrete - then maybe we should see about working out of there permanently, we could even give it a name - say Yeovilton. Naa.....it'll never catch on.

Mad_Mark

Well said. Too many who don't want to let mummy and daddy go.

Britney Spears 25th Mar 2004 15:41

I don't want to go back to Scotland, and it's not so I can stay near my parents. It's the cold, damp 3-day summers that got to me, and the 10 hour drive to civilisation, and the lack of jobs for wives/fiances/girlfriends, and the element of living in 'this town wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the RAF'. Oh yeah, and the housing's $hite. And the women are ugly. And fat. Did I mention thw weather's not that good either?

Training Risky 25th Mar 2004 15:46

It's not about not wanting to move away from Mummy and Daddy, it's about wanting a decent bit of nightlife. Unfortunately Northern Scotland is a bit short on this.

BillHicksRules 25th Mar 2004 15:50

BS,

I am sure you are simply fishing for a fight so I am biting.

"10 hour drive to civilisation"? That will happen when you drive at 2mph.

"lack of jobs for wives/fiances/girlfriends" I do apologise that there is not as much call for "ladies of the night" as where you spawn from.

Cheers

BHR

Here here Mad Mark I agree totally with your reply! As for Britney Spears I seem to recall Kinloss being the sunniest place in the UK come summer time(?) and probably some of the best summers i've ever had, including an island some where in the southern med!

Once heard a story that a young chap sold his car when he heard of his posting to Lossie thinking he wouldn't need it there, doh!

ppf :D

J.A.F.O. 25th Mar 2004 17:51

Yeah, close ISK, they'll then have closed (or, as good as closed) every base I ever served at. Then I'll be a real old fart.

genna tailor 25th Mar 2004 20:12

BS and TR
you pair of fast living crazy guys! I'm not surprised you hate it up here in the frozen north. The locals have somehow managed to spot the tossers a mile off; something to do with you types standing in the corner of the bars shouting hoorah at each other then all dancing together and being generally rude to everyone you meet.....bit like most young lads when they first start drinking really.
:yuk:
Moray is a fantastic place to live and if the likes of you want to stay down south please do so; it only raises the quality of life up here for the rest of us.

Spot on Mad Mark by the way!:ok:

Megaton 26th Mar 2004 06:48

Kpax,

It may not be the operational centre of the Universe anymore but Scampton is, believe it or not, open and has been for several years. A bit scruffy and well-worn but definitely open.

buoy15 26th Mar 2004 19:14

Well said MadMark
I remember well, the queue to PVR, & reports of claw marks up the A9 when they disbanded the Sqn at 3rd division south - the majority thinking they were destined for ISK - plus the creation of non jobs in the sim at Lyneham and along the the southern belt stations to placate the deadwood that formed the "ISK Avoidance Brigade" because they owned guesthouses and B&B's. or suddenly had a relative that was terminally ill. Thankfully, we didn't get too many :D

insty66 26th Mar 2004 22:26

MM et al
Not wanting to be somewhere is just that. Nothing more or less. I have visited Moray enough to know that for many reasons I do not want to live there. It is a nice part of the UK and it is a long way for the majority of people to move (think how far the average civvy moves when they take employment).
Most of the Locals are warm and welcoming too but there is still an undercurrent of Anti -mob, go and read Lossie Harbour wall if you think I'm dreaming or venture into the wrong public houses.
I know many people up north and the vast majority love it but to suggest that if you don't like it you must be a mummies boy or whatever is at best purile.

Jobza sure got a bite or two:ok:

ps The RAF still encourage people to settle down and then wonder why they get upset when they are moved. Is this logical? Discuss:E

Jobza Guddun 26th Mar 2004 23:05

Wasn't fishing, but I think my comment WAS a bit too flippant for some. Don't agree with MM either though, but thats the point of a forum.

I could rattle off a list of reasons as to why Moray is not my bag and plenty of other peoples' but we've all heard it before, so I'll just say that

a) Tried it twice (unwillingly, but got on with it), still not my bag, and not worth what it cost me.

b) Well, would like to be near mummy and daddy, but we haven't all got a set have we?

Would moving back into FIN/SCA make the airspace any more
crowded than it must have been in, say,1990 before our and USAFE drawdowns? Not ATC so I genuinely ask.

Biggus 27th Mar 2004 04:55

Considering that some people like being at ISK, and ISL, and some don't (I think we have finally agreed that - each to his own etc...) why is it that the RAF always manages to send lots of people who like being up north to the south, and vice versa, so everyone gets pi#*ed off!! Another master stroke of man management - I have a great idea, why don't we just ask them??

sonicstomp 27th Mar 2004 15:20

More traffic in Lincs

Lincolnshire needs more aircraft like Custer needed Indians !:D
