100 Sqn future?

An enthusiast's forum has a wee rumour that the Ton are to move from Leeming to Scampton.

Anybody else heard this one and OC 100, if the move is on will you re-militarise the Eng side please please please? You will suddenly possess the most sought-after sqn in the mob!

With rumours of the transfer of Leeming to the Army and of Scamptons expansion with bods from east coast bunkers it'd certainly make sense.

One assumes that he means those current Scampton-based Hawk flyers, the Arrows.

The Hawk flyers I refer to are the Red Arrows.

What military capability to they deliver!

I suggest the answer is none.

So why do we have them!

If the answer is they display british military hardware around the world. Then I would argue that the Red Arrows ability as pilots is what makes them special, not the aircraft.

If the answer is putting the RAF in a favourable light in the minds of the great unwashed and/ or anything to do with recruiting I suggest someone does a balance of investment appraisal. I am sure the amount spent is not worth the return.

In addition, if we are to shrink in size in terms of numbers of RAF servicemen, then do we need to be recruiting.

Red Arrows

I can understand why people question the cost-effectiveness of the Reds given the current climate, but surely since 1980 (when they began displaying the Hawk) they have not only helped put the RAF in peoples minds all over the world, but done something for UK industry too.

Look at all the nations flying the Hawk around the world, and see how many were visited by the Reds before they bought Hawks. As well as it being an excellent aircraft in its own right, obviously.

Keep them at it and give them a Reserve number plate too.

REDS REQUIRED?

Jobza

No one doubts the ability of the people that fly them, they are fantastic to watch, though it may be unfashionable to admit it, especially if you're in in the Mob.

IMHO, in the current climate, Phony Tony has a point. It would certainly send a message to the British Public if we could no longer afford to support the Reds ... question is, does anyone really believe the other Tony would allow their Airships to make such a stand?
