Stunning, what more needs to be said! (OK, so I'm going to write some more - so what!)

Sat in a pub this morning, surrounded by a big group of us all cheering on the boys, most feeling a little fragile after a dinner last night. What a way to spend a Saturday morning!

Apparently, some journalist in Oz said that England can't score tries against good rugby sides. Maybe someone ought to tell him that he's right - might shut him up!! Incoming!

To be fair (ish), the Aussies put up a hell of a fight and the two teams produced what has to be one of the greatest games of rugby I've ever seen. Respect to Jonny - what an awesome kick under just unbelievable pressure.

Proud to be English!

The arrogance is breathtaking ... and all on the one boot of one Pommie player!

Curiously, no mention of the Kangaroos clean sweep in the Rugby League Ashes Test series against the British Lions.

And quite right too - one simply does NOT talk about 'League'! It'd be about as offensive as talking about kissy-kissy Kevball!

Obviously not a son of the North (or of New South Wales)!

Well that's OK then - I'm just south of the old A40 - although north of the bypass which became the new A40.....

Back to the thread - lots of Union Flags about for a change - and lots of honest sporting behaviour by our Ozmates in being magnanimous in their team's defeat. True gents.

Ahh no mans land then.

Just had a phone call from a Aussie mate, asid he was out all night partying with the Brits (sorry English) in Sydney said the atmosphere was wonderful. I get the feeling that this is what sporting occasions are all about.

PS he was phoning to say that Union is a sport for wussies, League is what its all about, but then again he would wouldn't he

Congratulations England, a well deserved win from an outstanding team. The Wallabies went down fighting in a wonderful game of Rugby. BTW Have heard nothing but praise from most Aussies wrt. the English team and their supporters. The spirit of rugby is alive and well. And yes it does hurt to lose!
Heard Jonny giving an interview this morning, a true gentleman and a gracious winner. They say he is from Newcastle - but where is his Geordie accent?

OBNO

He PLAYS for Newcastle. We are allowing southerners up there now.

For those claiming League as a northern thing - ar$e. It is played in the MIDLANDS. Played Union in the NORTH until joining the mob - I never knew any of those League thugs - you had to head south for that sort of thing - Leeds I think were the closest.

Ahhhh - the sweet smell of success. Even BFBS kept working throughout. We did not decimate, but we bl00dy won!

Saw Concorde retire to Filton and couldn't help thinking, wouldn't that have been the way for the greatest English rugby(union) team to have arrived home - painted red and silver obviously.

Does this England win mean that " 1966 " will never be mentioned again ?

Mr Hinecap

The Northern Rugby Football Union was founded at the George Hotel, Huddersfield in 1895 (and became the Rugby Football League in 1922), which makes the game pretty northern, in my book.

It is a game that developed strong local loyalties, identity and real cosmopolitanism, with tight-knit Northern communities making heroes of Australians and New Zealanders and proved more welcoming to black Britons than the supposedly more sophisticated Rugby Union.

PS Rugby League's Increasing Popularity Within the Armed Forces
