Cheers The Don
Great name this time of year if your a fan of cricket;). A bit of thinking, but the LCC Oz life ain't that fun:yuk:!

Guys, what's the policy of moving off the 330 to another airbus?

Cheers to all.

mishokov 4th Dec 2010 07:43

Hi, could anybody explain what do they mean by "modern aircraft" in the 2500 hrs requirement? Is the criterium MTOW, or EFIS, or ...?

Thanks!

Iver 5th Dec 2010 01:31

Spiral climb,

I do not work at EK but I know a few people who do. I know a couple on the A330 and evidently you move to the A340-500 as FO within 1-2 years and you could be seated in an A380 within 2-3 years of start. The growth seems to be on the Airbus side with the many A380s (potentially 100+ A380s) and A350s on the way... The A330s will be phased out in a few years.

Given your experience in the Airbus, what's the attraction to the 777 fleet at EK? Are you already tired of the sidestick? ;)

Upcoming Interview

Hello to all. I was interviewed a couple years ago and placed in the hiring pool but that was right when the economy took a nosedive. They have been contacting me rather frequently recently and I finally updated my times and so forth and they told me to expect a January interview. I was wondering if any of you gentlemen are in the same position? Will the interview be the full process like I never interviewed before or is there an abbreviated version. Any insight or info on this would be very helpful. Thanks to all and fly safe.

skyvan 7th Dec 2010 05:24

Brewman you will have to undergo the full assessment. There is no abbreviated selection process as they need a snapshot of you as you are now.

The psychometrics are only valid for 1 year, as is the sim check. And the Compass testing is easy enough not to worry about.

Good luck.

Zap320 7th Dec 2010 10:59

Medical at EK

Can anybody tell me how extensive the medical checks are at EK. Are they FAA first class standards or are they much more detailed in their examination.

YYZ 7th Dec 2010 13:08

Zap320

I can only compare to the CAA initial and I would say they are the same if not a bit more invasive.
Out of the 6 taking a medical recently they found sugar in the urine of two and abnormalities with the EKG on another two, all of which have been renewing there medicals with no problem for years?

Either way you look at it, they are through.

YYZ

flyaway777 7th Dec 2010 13:10

Do you do another medical when actually joining the company or does the medical you do during your selection cover this?

brewman187 7th Dec 2010 15:51

thanks for the info skyvan, I appreciate it.

BritishGuy 7th Dec 2010 16:52

Brewman - do beware however, I know someone from the US who was in the holding pool a while back. Went to interview about 2 weeks ago (again), and he didn't make the cut. So about a year ago he was EK material and now he isn't. Just saying that just bcause one may have have made it last time around, doesn't mean so much. I thought it would have done - but apparently not.

FreqFlyer001 8th Dec 2010 06:01

What is the official EK position on basing crews outside of Dubai? Can anyone envision this hapenning at some point in the not too distant future?

oz in dxb 8th Dec 2010 07:25

Officially NO and more than likely NO.

FreqFlyer001 8th Dec 2010 10:24

That's unfortunate.

sig83 9th Dec 2010 01:15

I interviewed over a month ago and still have not heard anything. Made it through the selection program, they contacted my references, then nothing. How long does it take or do people get lost in the shuffle?

YYZ 9th Dec 2010 07:42

I give them a little call, everyone i know who got through to the end got told yes or no within two weeks?

EK roadshow in Canada next week

Emirates is off to Canada for their next roadshow. Vancouver on 12th Dec, Calgary 13th, Montreal on 15th and Toronto on 16th. Check their website for locations.

brewman187 9th Dec 2010 18:13

Thanks for the input britishguy. I realize things have changed some since a couple years ago. I don't expect by any means to be guaranteed a successful interview, I'm sure they'll treat me as if I have never tried before, I was just hoping for a little heads up on the process. I'll give it another shot and we'll see.

brewman187 9th Dec 2010 18:55

Costs

I know a lot of this has already been answered, but after searching for a while, I'm not sure of what is what. I am curious on first year F/O salary with wife only, no kids, what sort of expenses are expected to be paid by me when living in company accomodation. I know its a 3br flat, but how much could one expect to pay for electricity, water, sewer, trash, internet, tv, phone, and all else after allowance from company. Just want a good idea of what would be left over for other expenses back home. I gather around 7000/month starting, but if 5000 of that goes to expenses in dubai, not really a whole lot left for fun and leisure. Thanks for any input.

Easy Ryder 9th Dec 2010 22:33

Brewman 187,

Elec, water, trash, sewage, tv (free to air of which there are hundreds of channels but obvioulsy most not in english) & phone (up to 100DHS/month) all covered by EK.

Internet, pay-tv & mobile phone - look up the Etisalat, du, and OSN websites and choose a plan that suits you.

I assume your talking about 7000 USD? You'd have to be a knuckle head if you spunk away 5k a month.

Hope that helps

RoyBoy20 9th Dec 2010 22:42

Hey Guys

In the process of applying to EK. It states that I have 3 months to fill out and submit the application form. I was under the impression once I had registered on the site I could apply and update my hours accordingly regardless of how long the application was kept until it was submitted. As I need approx 6 months before I meet the requirement can anyone shed any light on this...

Regards,

brewman187 10th Dec 2010 04:11

Thanks

Easy Ryder, thanks for the info. I'll look those up. I did mean usd, but got some bills in the states to take care of too, so I should be ok with what is offered, maybe even have some left over for some fun. I appreicate the post.

Fred Garvin M.P. 10th Dec 2010 04:25

Brewman,
Don't forget that medical is automatically deducted from your salary as well. As soon as you get here and start registering for everything that the government requires, it will be 100 dhms here 100 dhms there, which adds up quickly. You will also need a car w/ insurance, make sure you calc that in too. Plus, if you take a furnished apt, even though it's furnished, it's sparesly furnished and you will want to add your own stuff on top of that. That will add a monthly expense as you outfit things your own way. You won't be getting any flying pay for several months, so take that into account. If you get the EPC card, that's a small monthly amount as well. They will also take out your portion of the provident fund. If you travel, especially back home to the states, that will add up very quickly as they are not the cheapest tickets home. If you buy TV's, computer, etc, that adds up. I brought some stuff over and bought a ton of converters, which saved, but the price of the converters adds up w everything (U.S. TV's don't work over here by the way, different region for the TV).

Just some things to add to your thought process. Lots of hidden fees here that you never think of until you get here and then go "Where the hell did my paycheck just go?"

brewman187 10th Dec 2010 15:42

Thanks Fred Garvin, it's hard to think about all these little things, so I appreciate the heads up. As far as car insurance, goes is this something that's real expensive or is it a fair price. Also, other monthly things like tv, cell, calling home to US-what's the going rate for these things and what do you suggest for calling home? Also I know banking will be different, are there any good banks that one can transfer money home without paying an arm and a leg for? Thanks again for all the info guys.

Fred Garvin M.P. 11th Dec 2010 05:32

Car insurance is similiar to what I was paying in the states. The only difference is that I paid quarterly in the states and you pay yearly here. When I bought my car brand new, it was close to 5000dhms the first year but has gone down each year. I think this year I paid around 3500 dhms. You won't find the "Wal-mart" deals on TV here, but the TV's can be less than if you went into Best Buy. I use a "pay as you go" cell phone. The phone itself was a little pricey. Find something on ebay that you want before you come over (make sure it takes a sim card), then bring it over, buy a small converter to charge it and you'll be fine. That's what I did for my wife. Only charge then was sim card. I spend less than 100 dhms a month on "charging the time up" on the phone.

In my opinion, all the banks over here are rip-offs. I use HSBC to transfer all my cash back home to my bank there. Then I pay my bills out of my bank at home. It's not that expensive to transfer home each month.

As far as calling home, it's cheap if you use a certain service and buy a "work-around" to use it. I'd suggest you have your laptop setup with it before you get here.

brewman187 11th Dec 2010 14:29

Thanks again Fred Garvin, appreciate it. All this info from you guys has been great. If you don't mind some of the things that are a little more sensitive, I might pm you guys in the future with questions if it's alright with you guys. Thanks again for all the help and info.

sig83 14th Dec 2010 12:49

Could someone please list the 330 layovers? It would be appreciated

donpizmeov 14th Dec 2010 12:58

Sig, go to emirates.com. Look at the destination map. Look at Africa. add Malta, Peking, Dusseldorf and Munich, Newcastle, Prague, Milan, Venice and Rome. Then look at India, Pakistan and all those Middle East places (but do it with the lights off or dimmed, and while its really late at night and dark, its more realistic that way.)
Keep discovering.

The Don

sig83 15th Dec 2010 02:19

I've going through the timetables trying to get an idea, but wasn't sure which are layovers. I assume blocks more than 5hrs are layovers. Thought someone at EK might be able to pull them up somehow.

donpizmeov 15th Dec 2010 05:23

Sorry mate, thought there was a route map on that site. Layovers as said before are Africa (Casablanca, Jo Berg, Durban, Lagos, Tripoli, Tunis, Dakar, Dar es salaam). Then as I said add Malta, Venice, Milan (340), Rome, Nice, Peking (340), Newcastle, Prague, Dusseldorf and Munich.

The majority of flying will be turns, India, Pakistan Middle East, and most of them at night.

Hope that explains it a bit better.

The Don

PS. I think the layovers would be the very minor bit of your decision making to come over to the Middle East. I would hope Career progression, contract stability, Upgrade policies etc etc would take precedence over which hotels you stay in. Lots of info on this site on what its like over here

pprudence 17th Dec 2010 18:51

I am supposed to be going to Dubai at the beginning of next month but have had No confirmation the dates for interview and ZERO REPLY from them.
It's now (almost!) less than 2 weeks. Anybody else same situation?
only me? :uhoh:

Zap320 17th Dec 2010 23:41

Pprudence,

I got my interview at the beginning of January as well and I got all of my travel dates confirmed. I even have my e-ticket on hand. Maybe you should give your recruiter a call. Good luck.

Stingray 18th Dec 2010 09:49

just be yourself?

Hi pilotara,

your statement
"The rest there is nothing to study just be yourself and it will be fine."
wasn't true in my case...

I agree the first day is pretty straight forward, although probably easy to fail if you haven't slept enough the night before.
The second day is data collection for them, and for the psychological profile questions there is nothing to study. One could probably improve ones score on the logical-geometrical reasoning test by practicing similar problems using books or computer programs.
Then on the third day they tell you that some applicants fail because they are trying to be somebody they think Emirates want. So yes be yourself, but that doesn't mean everything will be fine.

After the review of my profile with the psychologist, and the panel interview I almost felt welcomed to Emirates already, but when I got the phone call the conversation started with 'we are very sorry, but unfortunately....' .

And then you are left to think about whether you should have said this or that or not said this or that because you don't get a hint why you were not successful.

EK leave...+free days...

Hello girls and guys, few questions about leave

At EK you have 42 days leave, how many times can you take it? Is it possible to take it 6 times a year and get some free days on top to have 10 day block ???
Is there a paid parental leave, how long can you be sick and get paid...and other info like that is much apresheated... :)

Nuuk 18th Dec 2010 21:02

SP,

At EK you will have 42 days of leave in your contract. Since EK doesn't respect your contract you will be left with 30 days of leave (minimum U.A.E regulation).

You don't get any credit for your days of leave, which mean they are now guaranteed days off (would that count as an other breach of contract?). Meaning you have for example 7 days of "leave" in a month that will get you 0 hours of credit, your days off will be reduced to approximately to 6 or 7 days, and you will fly 70 hours plus in that month. That's the EK definition of leave :ooh:

Keep Recovering :oh:

SOPS 19th Dec 2010 07:09

paid Parental Leave..split leave up into blocks....you are a very funny person..you will have EK HR rolling around the floor....:E

InnocentBystander 19th Dec 2010 09:48

how long can you be sick and get paid
This is one of the few truly good things about EK. You don't get penalized if you get sick; you will continue to get your base pay, housing allowance etc.

There have been a lot of cases where guys were on sick leave for extended periods. One guy I met had a really bad motorcycle accident in the desert and was off work for close to three years. Another guy fell sick during basic indoc and was off work for 6 months. Once he was better he did office work and once his medical was reestablished he continued his line training like nothing happened.

SyncPilot 19th Dec 2010 17:05

SOPS- thanks a lot, i was LOL reading your post, in my country you can take 6 months leave after child birth either you or your wife, and get full pay ( thats why i pay 50 % income tax....:yuk:)

I would realy apresheate if someone could PM me EK FO 330/777 roster...:) :ok:

atpcliff 20th Dec 2010 05:14

Hi!

Or, you can live in the US, like we do with the World's Best Health Insurance program, as many conservatives and Republicans will tell you.

When we had our kids, my wife and I were entitled to: 0 days off of paid leave. 0 days off of unpaid leave. Very nice!
