Does EK hire many Americans?
Ladies and Gentlemen,
First off Eid Mubarak. I am an American currently flying for a regional airline in the US. My handle should give away my position. I've lived in the Gulf (mom and dad are still there) and I've read some good things about Emirates. I'm also very attracted to the expat lifestyle. I've read this board from time to time and it looks like I'm up against some stiff competition. I know that one thing I need is jet time. I expect to be flying the CRJ within the next year or two (at the most). What else should I do to prepare? I'm working on my degree and I am building turbine PIC time although it's not in a jet. I know there's alot of Englishmen and Aussies flying for EK but it would sure be nice to know about any Americans flying over there. I'd appreciate any input y'all can give me.

I've just got hired by EK in Oct and my class dates should be around Feb of 03. Like yourself, i am an American too. They do hire Americans and yes the competition is fierce but, I was fortunate to get called for an interview despite the lack of PIC time.
For your info my flight time at the time of interview was:
6700TT, 4700 Jet(744 and 320) all SIC, 1000 turboprop(ATR)
1000 PIC
Its a GREAT company and I can't wait to get start it.

Thanks ejacrew, I appreciate the reply. Right now, I'm sitting at about 3900 total, with about 1500 turbotrash and of that about 350ish is PIC in the Brasilia. I have no jet time yet. I flew the ATRash also, did you fly for American Eagle by chance? If so, when were you there?

Hours is a measure to a point but becomes meaningless after a while. You become experienced, more experienced, even more experienced and then just start to get old. Doesn't life suck.
Has a guy with 8000 hours seen half the things that a guy with 16000 hours has? Probably not, he's just seen the same things 100 or 200 times rather than 400 times and is half as likely to be stuck in his ways.
Has a 12,000 hour 146 day VFR Captain from Oz more relevant experience than a SAS First Officer with 4,000 hours operating in and out of high terrain fields in crappy weather in Scandanavia. Probably not.
So don't look at hours in isolation, think about the quality of those hours and what they would be worth to an employer. Type familiar has to help, command time yeah, training background you bet, jet yep, how long ago did you apply and how persistent have you been....etc etc etc
Why should a 15,000 hour guy that has been in the pool for 2 months get a leg up on someone that has 6,000 and has been there for 4 years?
Hours Schmours, remember everyone looks great on paper!! Have patience and stay positive.

Yes, based on your point of view, a 12,000-hour pilot deserves an opportunity before a 4,000-hour driver. 8,000 hours mean, at least, 10 more years in aviation, and during those long years a pilot can learn an important thing that you haven’t learnt yet: modesty.
All must have a chance but there’s no experience comparison between those guys, even for a 146-day VFR captain (well there are several days during a year for an IFR approach) and a RH automated airplane pilot. Give me a break.

f16hotburner....please don't come here...that is one of the most ridiculous, insulting posts i've seen in32 years on Pprune...I'm a real american...yup, the passport, born and raised and all...and myself and lots of other real americans as you put it are quite content here...yes americans do work at e.k. and lots of other places here as well...and am made to feel welcome by a vast majority of gcc nationals, who are realistic enough to distance individual citizens, from our most often seemingly "disappointing" foreign policies.

Why not come and see what goes on in these parts. If Al Kharj is your view of 'South West Asia' then I could understand how you got a jaundiced point of view. Its like the difference between Alamagordo and New York.

As for American pilots, my info isn't all too accurate but I thought as of six months ago the only actual Yank was an ex USAirways pilot who finally had enough at USAIR and resigned, good move eh? Ex EK Yanks to include one or two ex Eastern, and two ex Saudia. There are a number of "US residents," read green card, and also a few US passport holders, ie dual nationality types. EK's pilot hires have about the highest qualifications that you could imagine. It's like a collage from all the airlines of the world. Very qualified, but not too many Yanks.
