Formula 1 Aircraft
Now that it has been confirmed that Bahrain is to have a Formula 1 race in 2004. How many aircraft are likely to descend on our little country that week?
Will we be able to cope?

Formula 1 is coming to Bahrain, NO ****!! Do you have a link where I can find out more about those happenings??
As for aircraft coming into town, I'm TOTALLY guessing, but wouldn't there be 2 a/c per team? One for the cars and the gear and another for the driver? Plus Bernie Ecklestone (??) will most likely fly in with his jet, plus any other directors that might have their own wings. So how many is that, 20-30??

I believe we are talking 20+ 747Fs arriving in a 3-day period (bearing in mind that they all come at the same time for practice and then leave right after the race).
That's a lot of tarmac that needs to be laid by 2003!!!
Very interested that we actually got it - I don't think there's enough 5* hotel space - Coulthard et al are hardly going to stay in the Baisan!!!!

Bahrainlad, why should Dubai be upset?
They have waited more than 20 years for Bahrain to catch up! There was a Grand Prix in December 1981, on a 1.6 mile circuit laid round the Hyatt on the sea front. This circuit has largely vanished, although when I visited in 1995 there were still some of the Armco barriers in place.
Whilst I am searching for the result, you might like to see the poster:

The Dubai Grand Prix of 1981 was never an official Grand Prix as such....

There has long been talk of races in the Middle East but the only major event was in Dubai in December 1981 when British businessman - Martin Hone, who later organized the Birmingham Superprix - organized a Grand Prixon a makeshift 1.6-mile track around the Hyatt Regency Hotel. There were five events and considerable appearance money meant that the turnout of VIPs was impressive. There was talk at the time of the track being extended but the Dubai GP never happened. The Arab world became more interested in rallying with the highly-successful Middle Eastern Rally Championship.
DUBAI is planning to build a Formula 1 circuit in the course of the next 18 months as part of a new development which will be called the Dubai Autodrome and Business Park. The facility will feature kart tracks, a driving school and tracks for motorcycle racing in addition to a three-mile road course which is intended to be up to the latest F1-spec. The scheme is the brainchild of Union Properties. The intention is for the facility to become the center of the motorsport industry in the Middle East. There is expected to be a street race in Dubai at the end of this year to help add to the momentum.

Interesting that the report only quotes Sheikh Hamed and not Bernie Ecclestone. They would have to get rid of at least one European race to make room for this, and the Chinese one. Likely candidates seem to be Austria, Belgium and San Marino.
Not proving very successful in finding out the result, but still trying!

But following the announcement on Saturday that Bahrain had landed the Formula One deal, all attention was focused on the new course and what it would mean to the international racing community.
But questions still remain over whether it will become the 18th destination on the Formula One calendar, or whether it will replace an already established race.
"I think there is a strong possibility of 18 races," said British American Racing (BAR) team principal David Richards at the Italian Grand Prix yesterday.
"The issue is getting value and if the teams are rewarded for going to the extra race, because it clearly costs a lot of money to go to extra events," he told Reuters news agency.

Bear in mind that Bernie is very p***ed off with the state of some of the facilities in Europe - particularly ones that haven't been upgraded for yonks. That's why Silverstone was so keen to get its access road. New, purpose-built circuits such as Sepang, the A1 Ring and in the future, Bahrain, are seen as Bernie's vision of an ever more high-yield Formula 1 - no more fiddling about behind the garages etc.
