Agree Rim - partially at least - I do agree on most of what you said however I do not agree that the flap selection is covered by the 1000' requirement due to the wording/paragraph differences mentioned in my previous post. I don't personally think it is incorrect to submit an ASR for 'selection' below 1500'. Sure it may be a CYA, but the policy is unclear and I cant blame anyone keeping in mind the less than supportive attitude from those that should take a more balanced view. My issue with it is that it is being presented in this thread as if the policy is clear when it is not; thereby creating a risk for someone to end up with an unnecessary 'chat' that may not be pleasant. Happy Landings.

Bloggs...

You are entitled to write whatever it is you want to write. Personally, writing something that is not required is pointless and shows lack of knowledge of our own manuals. You are essentially drawing attention to yourself.

Per OM-A, the definitions are crystal clear, at least in my opinion.

1. "Shall" or "must" means the application of a rule or procedure is a mandatory
2. "Should" means that the application of a rule pr procedure is recommended

Now if 'mandatory' and 'recommended' mean the same to you, then there isn't much else i can do to help. For me they are quite different and are written that way for a reason.

Rim. I don't need your opinion on my level of knowledge. Your opinion is of little value to me. Nor do I need to know about your connections in Safety who you claim (And Im sure they would not appreciate you saying so as you are presenting them in a bad light) chuckle at peoples ASR's. Make your posts a bit more professional. Enough Said.

Joe/Rim

1.) The question that begs to be asked is "who really gives a flying frock"?

2.) If you you are fully configured by 1500' with all checklist done, on speed and nothing to do but land the pig then no one will ever call you for those chats.

However, if you start playing around the margins and then happen to have a bad day that requires a GA below 1000' then you might have that meeting that draws attention to yourself.

Management will never call you into the office for burning the extra 100 kg of fuel required of "2" above, they will however start looking at you if you don't...why frock around? Are you getting any kickback on the 100 kg you save otherwise? I thought not.

Just play by their rules and retire so that no one ever knew your name.

Yes, pointless ASR's are ridiculous, some guys just don't have a pair and live in fear...who knows...maybe their wives are nasty.

Knowing exactly when to write an ASR will draw less attention and protract your career

If your ASR wording/description includes wording like...

Was almost

Nearly

Might of

Temporarily

Minor

Just about

Only just

Then think and check if you really need to submit an ASR. To me, it is the clear Fear Factor from on high that is making the poor souls admit to nothing Safety Related and worthy of reporting.

Think, if somone else can benefit by the knowledge or fact that you report on the form, then it surely is an ASR.
