Qatar Airways to join One World alliance

In an interesting turn of developments for GCC carriers, it looks like Qatar Airways will be the first airline to join one of the three major alliances.

Sources have revealed that Oneworld Airline Alliance is set to officially welcome its first Gulf carrier member next week: Qatar Airways. This move makes Qatar the first of the rapidly expanding Gulf carriers to join a global airline alliance. The airline will join fellow alliance members of British Airways and American Airlines.

Oneworld and Qatar both declined to comment on the speculation

Qatar Airways has no plans to join oneworld alliance | Reuters
"ABU DHABI | Mon Oct 1, 2012 5:42am EDT

(Reuters) - Qatar Airways has no plans to join the oneworld airline alliance, its Chief Executive Akbar al-Baker said on Sunday, dismissing reports that the airline had become the newest member of the group as "rumour."
Asked if the carrier would join oneworld, which includes British Airways, owned by IAG, Baker said: "No, we will not. It's all rumours."

Having in mind previous close connections with Lufthansa and United, I think Star Alliance would make more sense. But what do I know...

There are many contradicting stories online, many sources claiming it to be a sure thing while some quote AAB and QR as having denied the rumors.

A "major" oneworld announcement is set for 8 October (Monday), not long to wait to find out what the truth is.

In any case, how does this effect the pilots?

How might this restrict growth and eventual pilot opportunities? Thought Qatar wanted to dominate the world on its own...

You are still thinking........??? Qatar has been dominating on its own. Lets see how this alliance turns out. I am sure AAB has seen something in it. He is not a fool!!!

I suspect that it was Oneworld that approached Qatar, rather than the other way round.

I would love to know what was put on the table to convince AAB to say 'yes'.

To the passenger it will mean the arrivals/departure boards covered by 'many carriers' operating one flight.

The Problem With Code-Sharing by Travelogger

For example you only have to look at the BHX departure board to see that '5' carriers operate the BHX-AMS route. To the non initiated it would look like Kenya Airways, Delta, China Southern, Ukraine and KLM operate it.
