Update received. Broadly no change in situation. At the end of September they are going to start making offers for the 777 fleet for courses starting in Jan 2013. Numbers yet to be determined but more people in the pool than places available. No more airbus courses this year.

It says there are more people in the hold pool than places available before the end of the financial year, which ends at the beginning of April. Last time I checked the pool goes into June/ July? Don't sweat about it!

but I just wanted to know why Emirates hasn't adopted the idea of DESOs
and help a lot of EK wannabes reach their goals sooner

just curious since it would drastically benefit EK financialy.
Don't forget that the basic costs of type rating someone..then providing accommodation are the same, as are bringing families across etc..so no saving there.
Next, how many EK sectors actually require a cruise S/O, certainly a few on the 777 and a couple on the 380, but that's about it. I think EK understand that they can attract a reasonable standard of candidate without having to resort to 250hr heros, in any case we have a bit of that already with the local cadet pilots.
Lastly, my impression is, thanks to the location of the crew rest on our fleet, the local GCAA require two current and qualified pilots upfront at all times....a requirement that an S/O is unable to fill in their eyes.

Jungle drums say another 40ish DEC required before the end off financial year. This further reduces the number of FOs required. I am sure .HR/recruiting will update everyone once the dust settles.

I'm sure you can agree with me that EK of all airlines would save a LOT of money by having SOs for their long haul flights than an all FO and Capt. crew. Surely there must be a good reason why they don't have them already, than just "they don't want them". I am not having a go or anything at you WK, just curious since it would drastically benefit EK financialy.

Besides - would you really want to be a 1,000hr SO while a cadet with 500 hours outranks you????
And to clarify - they really "just don't want them" is from the top

Well as Ex A380 says it's a lot of extra training to get upgrades from the RHS at a time when the training department is stretched to the seams! As I say, logistically difficult... I'd like to see more F/Os upgrading believe me!!!

for the update
for the Jan courses
for the limited positions
