How many of the 500 newly licensed FAA CPL holders are actually american citizens or green card holders ?
Does this 500 include foreigners who train in the U.S ?

The guy who told me said total for the year.
I have heard from a lot of sources that most of the pilot training at the "professional"/big flt schools are foreign students. A number of places have shut their doors for lack of students.

Its true . All the major flying schools in the U.S have 99% foreigners . They all leave after their training back to their home countries
When i trained at my flying school the only american training there was a lady for a PPL so that she could fly her husband's private C172
The likely place where you see more americans training are at the Big universities like Riddle and UND
If only I had a green card.....

USA were training 7'000 to 11'000 pilot a year.
so you tell me, it droped to 500 pilot?
so you tell me, it droped to 500 pilot?
... instead it is easier stay home punching numbers on keyboard and getting almost an airline captain salary than start a pilot career which continue to be one of the most dangerous job with lots of variable during your entire life as a pilot ...
... the tendency from the passed 10 years was pretty discouraging ... you could have easily found a younger pilot willing to do your job cheaper, faster and better (P2F ruin the entire market) ... now let see if a second economic recession will stop this dangerous trend!

I did some research online, and from what I can tell the 500 number is incorrect.
However, the most Commercial/ATP pilots in the US was in 1972, and the numbers have been dropping, with some plateaus, through 2010. Commercial pilots now number about 2/3 of what they were in 1972, and ATPs are down to about 75% of their peak in 1972.
Student pilot starts peaked in 1979, and are now about 1/3 of what they were.
Many of these student pilots (and Comm/ATP ARE foreign students...)
What with all the new airframes now flying, and those projected to fly in the near future, the massive drop in US pilot numbers are important for hiring.
