EY or EK?

I am in the position of holding offers from both. A320 at EY or A330 or B777 at EK.
Would appreciate some guidance on which to take?
How do the packages really compare? on paper they don't look too different.
All opinions welcome.
Thanks guys.

330 or 777 at EK without a doubt...320 lifestyle at EY is very poor from what I hear...

The EY staff travel may be generous on the ticket quantities, but it is EXTREMELY expensive for ID 90 space available, for what would otherwise be empty seats.

EK 330/777 hands down. If EY gave you the 330/777 I would say EY, but since its 320 no way.

You'll find that many EY pilots prefer to live in Dubai and for good reason. Many more amenities, options, clubs etc. EY was a recent start up and has a good foundation now but has been a bit of a mish-mash. Let's be honest, EK has been the airline in the ME for years now. Despite the drawbacks, nothing has changed.

Mate of mine is flying the A320 for EY and loves the life style, not a bad word to say.

Just read the EK threads and make up your own mind. In my view if you want some sort of life stay away from EK.

I have to agree, the A320 guy's are really suffering ref roster's at EY.( seen and heard this first hand) zero sympathy from the rostering dept as they have to fill the route structure with many night flights, min rest at base etc.
Without question I would move to EK rather than EY, EY is always on the back foot at the moment as profit is a long way off which in turn means more cost cutting in all dept's including housing to meet the CEO's threshold for his bonus.

Danger

first off i would not consider joining either. try to join someone else preferably closer to home and forget the sandpit. if i could turn back the clock 5 years i certainly would maybe have thought different.

i think mixed fleet 320/330 at ey can be a good lifestyle u get best of both worlds short haul and long haul, BUT the programme for mixed fleet is in its infancy and to be fair is too early to criticise. if they ever get the balance of mixed fleet to say roughly 50/50 it would be great i think.

a while back we hardly had any layover trips on 319/320 but now things have got better and i think we have MSQ, DME , TRV and CMB which i think is not bad for a narrowbody lifestyle.

working from AUH and living in DXB is fun again getting the best of both worlds, But this could change overnight if housing department has there way.

i think command prospects at ey are still way better then most other airlines, especially as ek has so many more pilots.

and lastly i have been fortunate to commute home every month so it makes all the difference and keeps me happy.... for now !

good luck on your decision making....

I agree with GTA.

Whilst 320 flying is a bit tough right now, with recruiting (for FO's) and CCQ (backwards from 330 for Capts) it will improve. And yes once MFF is fully implemented, the mix wil be great.

New layovers in DAM and KTM. Its improving all the time.

I am lost as to how Cayenne can state ID90 is expensive. The cost isnt the problem... finding seats is!

EY is not a good place to be. For those who think they want to upgrade, think again. Command stinks here on the 320. You don't have any life at all. I have not had three days in a row since December. They are short of capt, but won't upgrade because then they'll be short FO,s. Why they don't hire more bodies is a mystery.

Go for the A330 at EK and fly the A380 as FO in 3-4 years.

Puff, your friend on the 320 is puffing something if he says he likes the lifestyle. I am trying to survive it and so is everyone else who is stuck in this 320 nightmare.

AFD; yes they are hiring, but they need to upgrade as well. What they really need to do is join the 20th century and use a program that will build effective lines that would allow us to have a life and some rest.

no brainer, EK 330/777 even though there is problems. It pales in significance to the !!!! being dealt at EY. I have done both. Plus you get to live in Dubai which again is a far better option.

EK without a doubt. Though I m not familiar with all the problems over there I doubt it could be worse than the life you would get on the 320 at EY.

Ey 320 rosters are a joke. Lifestyle in Abu dhabi is certainly not bad but most people prefer living in Dubai.

regarding upgrade time, it might be lengthy based on current amount of people upgrading every month. however I doubt it will remain constant in the coming years. I could be completely wrong though.

Join etihad :

F/o 320, very busy full of night turn arounds in the indian continent and exhausted.

2 or 3 bedroom appt as per contract
surounded by labour camps or mugg and bean near by

Need 2 cars for family needs

5 to 6 years command

Join Emirates:

F/o 330/777 global flights with layovers

Huge villa, pools and shop near by, feels like home livingas much that is possible here.

1 car only needed as company car and driver supplied by company.

5 to 6 years command

Just to name a few small but huge differences. good luck to all. Honestly just apply for the next new vp position at Etihad as they pay far better and require far less experience to apply.

Etihad the only airline with more vp's and svp's than aircraft. I believe that we now have over 70 vp and svp in house to date.

This why we need cost cutting to pay for housing allowance in excess of 300,000 aed ,huge salaries and of course your bonus.

Ey/ek

Guys and Girls,

This "proffesional forum" of ours is amazing. Read the EK thread, and it is nothing but doom and gloom. " Do not at any cost leave your present employer and move to the middle east. The company is going nowhere/backwards, etc.)Blah, Blah....

Read the latest EY thread and you get the same, (housing, roster, etc), blah, blah....

Most of the issues re both companies are true.

The REAL truth of the matter is that most of us are already here and have to make the most of what is going on. There is very little we can do to change our circumstances. (Housing, transport, staff travel, etc)

So, my advice is to anybody thinking about and/ or having to accept a position here, is chat to your mates, do your research, come over and have a look. Then decide!! This forum is poisned by disilusioned pilots living "the DREAM".

Sir O
