This isnt a pilot rumor network anymore, its SD personal hate network. True or not, what comes around goes around

Yeah right!

QR has 240 planes on order, fleetsize will double by 2015, 1200 pilots now/3000 by 2015!

So I do not think anybody should be worried about loosing his job to new joiners. Now, if they will survive here untill 2015 that is another question. Many pitfalls along the way.

Regarding all the rest:

What goes around comes around!

No. SD is not the ex CPT.

SD refers to the ex DCPT A320. It appears he's now the Flight Ops official hit man. A job he's perfectly suited for!

Speaking of management, how is your man (BW) from GB Airways getting along with all this ?

BW has been sidetracked, just like his mate IM.

For now he is still in charge of some smaller projects, but he will be one of the normal linepilots soon!

The ride down was even faster than the trip upwards I guess.

Angel Black Magic and the truth behind Evian Water

There was this interesting thread about Black Magic in QR that did not last very long... It disappeared overnight like most of these threads that try to shed some light on what is really going on in QR.

I would like, if I may, to say a few words about Black Magic and how it operates. Here is an example:

I sincerely doubt that this captain which worked for QR for 13 years was only terminated for ordering Evian water. I guess that the Evian water situation was the last drop that made the glass overflow, if you forgive my pun

However, everyone has been led to believe that management would terminate anyone just because they demanded something so insignificant. Evian water has become a Symbol. A Symbol for how fragile the pilots' position is in this company and a reminder that we are not supposed to ask for anything more. If you cannot ask for a simple bottle of water, how are you going to ask for better working conditions, better salary, right?

Now, the more one repeats Evian water, the more one reinforces the message: "You are no one in this place, you are not going to get anything more, your position is fragile"

And this is how Black, White, Green or any other type of magic operates. People get impressed by Symbols. And the more you repeat the words, the more power you give to the Ideas that are behind the words.

Drinking Rayyan with a smile on my face is the best way to show to the people that are watching me (because we ARE being watched, reported and spied) that I don't care about their scare tactics. Also, it reminds me that "That Old Black Magic" cannot affect me.

Don't fall for their dirty tricks. In this, I agree with what Dan said a few posts back: if you spell Evian backwards, you get the moral of this story.

Cheers, and blue side up!

Is it bad to be an ostrich?

Interesting view TOGALOCK, and I have to say: "exceptionally well written". To the point and logical. You are the 1st QR writer to voice a wonder that has lurked in the back of my mind: "Is it possible to ignore all the that goes on there?"

I would have filled out the QR application if I could get the motivation to take the time to figure out how to. So far I haven't...I weigh it up daily: is the job worth the time? Nice equipment, quick command, and none of the complaints are about working too hard either, so maybe the roster is ok? On the other hand no one disputes that it is an utterly appalling and dreadful work environment. I'm living in a far worse place than Doha, which is no St Tropez for sure, but there are worse places to live than Doha, eg where I am now...

Many of us (pilots) seem to find it a hobby to complain, however there is obviously a lot of bad stuff going on in QR, so I am not executing this judgement on the others who are complaining here. I am the sort of person who tries to go to work, keep my head down and to stay out of what is going on around me. An ostrich. Mate, my glass is 3/4 empty, but I'm in a skulling (drinking) competition. By that I mean I try to filter as much of the bad stuff out and try to focus on the positive. So I do wonder if it is possible to do this in QR? Clearly the regime is oppressive, but is it possible to minimise its effect on you? Is there a silent minority (majority even?) in QR who CAN go to work and 'play the game by their rules' then go home and take off their jackets (and caps, if you're allowed) and forget about it all? (Problem is they're the ones who, instead of being on pprune all the time (like me), are out of the house). Or is it truly so vile that those people are like finding bacon in Medinah?

What happened to that thread on black magic ?

Would the Mods care to comment on that ? or was it a simple QRF on the part of the PPruner who dared ?

TOGA LOCK

Your post was an eloquent description to the bottom line of the problem being portrayed here.

Angel Ostriches are very noble people...

Richard:

Ostriches hide their heads when they are scared: it is their natural response. I suppose that, considering the times we are living in, hiding our heads might be the best strategy. You asked, is it possible to filter out all this free floating hostility? Well, it depends on how much practice you have at doing this and how tired you are. In my case I find that, when I am not too tired, these things don't bother me that much. When I am overworked, overflown, over-stressed, it becomes a bit more difficult.

However, one thing certainly seems to work, at least in my case. I always remind myself that this situation has been going on in the industry for the last 10 years and that it does not matter where I live, which company I work for and which culture I have to deal with, it will hardly get better. We are dealing here with a new paradigm: "The Migratory Pilot", which has become more generalized with the advent of globalization, and it might take years for things to settle to a point were they become comfortable again. Until this happens, we have to learn to cope.

Going back to your ostrich analogy, ostriches are also very good at running. So I guess that, when the hole is getting to small for your head and you need a bit of fresh air, running in search of a new hole to hide your head is also an alternative. Therefore, when things get too stale where you are "Run, Run, Forrest, Run!!!"

Thanks Concordino...

As far as the Disappearing Thread is concerned, I guess that we will have to wait for the Mods to re-post.

TOGA LOCK!

You hit the nail on the head my friend. Exactly what I was thinking and what I am doing.

Do not accept any symbols to be forced upon you. Do not engage in their futile games. I do not need EVIAN, I will bring my own blankets if I want to use one and I will drink my own NESPRESSO. Not a hair on my head that thinks of asking for those things!

To outsiders all these things might seem small and not worth writing about, but it is exactly what TOGA LOCK described above. It is management's way try to show how small and powerless we are. All we as pilots have to do is place ourselves above it all.

Unfortunately many pilots do not realise this and they engage on a daily bases in discussions concerning water bottles!

MODS, bring back that thread please?

You claim to be imune to the attacks you receive regularly coming from companies being focussed on here. Now is your time to prove it.

Anyway, for those intrested:

1) Go to GOOGLE
2) Search "Black Magic Pprune"
3)Once the results appear, dont go to the link but click on "CACHED" below the link
4) Et voila, there it is in all its uncencored glory.

You will LOVE IT!

(Q: will the Black Magic in QR be able to influence GOOGLE or not?)

missing posts

Funny, I made a post about SD and that disappeared also. There was nothing untowards in the post. Makes one wonder about the Mods.

shneidertrophy - what is wrong with BW? I know he made some unfortunate decisions initially but I think he is being a good boy now.

Wondering about the Mods NoJoke? Kinda like Chicken Licken & the sky. Almost all the mods fly the line & really haven't got time to troll though the site, weeding the chaff from the whey, the fly-**** from the pepper; there is no conspiracy theory manifest here; I can assure you.

Personally I think that TOGA LOCK brings a fresh ray of sunshine to this forum; his prose is excellent and his vision is clear. The kind of guy you know is going to fly real well before you even get on board with him.

Carry on please guys.

Angel The Power of Symbols and the Seat Belt

Thanks for the praises 4HP. I don't think I deserve them, really... As far as flying really well, I only wish I could. I am just one of those standard, not very special pilots that you meet every day. I have my good days and I have my bad days. I have never had more than an average grade in my sims and I struggle sometimes to remember my limitations. I must say that Airbus has made my life easier with its 8 memory items philosophy (it is 8, right?). On the other hand, I've always wondered whether it would be easy for me to remember my limitations while the aircraft is set on an accelerated flat spin that I cannot get out from

I digress, though... Going back to my "We give Power to Symbols" rant, I would like to share an experience I had during my first years in aviation. There was this Check Captain of about 58 years of age that used to say: "I will fail anyone that does not fasten his seat belt and harness as soon as he takes his position in the flight deck". As you can imagine, this extreme attitude towards seat belts fastening was debated heatedly by all the young and eager copilots. We used to criticize this Captain for being such an extremist, thinking about him as a maniac. Our most agreed line of thought was: "This guy is crazy! Why do I need to fasten, if we are pushing back in one hour...". The seat belt became a Symbol for us, and talking about seat belts would instantly bring the image of this guy, inspiring many laughs at his expense.

One day, I bumped into this guy in a layover. He was going out for dinner and also was I. He told me to join him. As much as I dreaded spending my only peaceful time after a long 5 sector day with this gentleman, I couldn't say no. I was trapped... The dinner turned out to be very enlightening, especially after a couple of bottles of wine. Out of bravery, or stupidity maybe, I gathered all my guts to ask the guy about his partial view about seat belts. This is what he answered, as I could feel the weight of his years and experience in his voice: "A good pilot always fastens his seat belt as soon as he takes his seat. What happens if, after you finished refueling, boarded your passengers, did your briefing and you are ready for push back, you realize that your seatbelt is broken?" Apart from the obvious and most immediate implication of this statement, the image stuck in my mind for many years. It became a Symbol, and the Idea attached to it would now be: "A good pilot is always one step ahead".

Now, another image: "Ladies and Gentlemen, Fasten Your Seat Belts, we will have a bumpy ride ahead!". This time around, Fastening our Seat Belts has attached to it a more urgent meaning: "As long as we are not one step ahead of what is going on, and stop getting carried away by Word Black Magic, we are really going to have a bumpy ride ahead!"

Stop the ball, don't let it get bigger. Repeating the same stories again and again only makes things worse as the Symbols they try to command become more powerful.

Cheers, and Blue Side Up!

Ostrich

Toga Lock,
How refreshing to read your excellent, well spoken, well written posts. Please keep it up.
Just one comment if I may concerning the wingless bird....puting my head in the hole and my bung hole way up in the air will make me slightly feel uncomfortable....knowing that my most precious part is an easy target! I won't even see it coming. I'll mostly feel it though...

Keep the brown side down....

4HP

Not chicken licken, and not worried about the sky (apart from the normal concerns) I do, however, see that occasionally posts go missing. Now whether it is God, a Mod or Ken Dodd I don’t really care; it still went missing.
Conspiracy theory? That could never happen.

As for people that can talk the talk? I have flown aircraft from the Bell 47 to the B747 and met a lot of good talkers.
