It was in local news papers during National day and New Years when a lot of locals were driving with Sheikh's pictures on front and back.

REMEMBER, ANY TINT INCLUDING CLEAR TINTS IN FRONT IS NOT ALLOWED!!! Don't rely on V-Cool guys as they are only doing a business; they will say anything to get your money. The new rule is that 30% tints on sides/back and NO tints, NOT even clear tints in front. This is for expatriats of course. If you can get a doctor's note with any skin condition, then it's possible to get a permission for front and back or more than 30% tint. Contact RTA office regarding that.

Pass this message on.

Cheers.

The following link is about a year old, so could have been superseded as OMDB pointed out. It is also being written by a guy who sells 3M tint, so you might question the source, although he does make reference to a UAE law that ALLOWS light tint on the front (allowing 70% of light thru) and 30% on the sides and rear.

Dubai Forums : United Arab Emirates, Dubai Discussions - Tint 101: What Every UAE Customer Should Know About Tint

Don't see how anyone can object to a clear film on the windscreen, as there are so many blatantly tinted cars around, not to mention kids bouncing around merrily inside the speeding Land Cruiser with the flashing headlamps.

Here is another angle on tinting. Whilst trying to seek the law on the internet, I came across the following from this year April 2009.

For_Immediate_Release:

(Free-Press-Release.com) April 15, 2009 -- Abu Dhabi Mistreating pets, eating or drinking in public during Ramadan, violating the car window tint rule, and other such minor offences will be punishable by up to 240 hours of community service under a new law, an official said.
A draft law allowing people who commit certain minor offences to repent in public by doing community service instead of spending time in jail or paying fines will take effect immediately," said Lieutenant Colonel Saif Obaid Al Khaili, director of the Community Service Department at the Interior Ministry.
The law will not cover offenders who have already been sentenced.
Al Khaili, also chair of the committee on alternative penalties, said the length of community service will be determined in coordination with a number of ministries and governmental departments, including the Ministry of Social Affairs, the UAE Red Crescent Authority, Abu Dhabi Municipality, General Islamic Affairs and Awqaf Authority.
The draft law provides for ordering offenders to do voluntary work, work with people with special needs, work for the municipality, or the Islamic Affairs departments in cleaning and maintaining mosques across the country, work for public charitable and awareness campaigns such as anti-smoking drives and blood drives.
On March 15, the Cabinet approved the proposal.
The proposal would require approval of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to become law.
Under the draft law, community service of between 20 and 240 hours would be imposed on people who commit 20 minor offences, including harassing women in public, which at present carries a jail term of up to one year, a fine, or both.
The draft law, Al Khaili said, would also provide for undergoing rehabilitation courses.
"Whoever attempts to disgrace a female by words or by deeds in a public street or frequented place, shall be ordered to put community service ranging between 20 and 240 hours and shall undergo training courses of not more than 160 hours," according to Article 1 of the draft law.
At present, the UAE Penal Code states that this offence is punishable by detention for a period not exceeding one year and by a fine not exceeding Dh10,000, or by either of these two penalties.
Al Khaili said enforcing community service would improve the mental state of convicted people and help them integrate back into society without any notable psychological effects.
Fact file: New rules

- Eating or drinking in public during Ramadan will carry up to 150 hours of community service or a training course of not more than 150, or both.

- Violating the 30 per cent car window tint rule will bring up to 150 hours of community service or a training course of not more than 50 hours, or both.

- Mistreating animals will carry up to 20 hours of community service or a training course of not more than 20 hours, or both.

- Driving carelessly will bring up to 240 hours of community service or a training course of not more than 100 hours, or both.

I inquired about the law from RTA today (30 - June - 2009), and the representative on the phone said,

"30% or less is allowed on side and back windows. In front you can have 20 cms (from top) limited tint of 30% or less. If you have any further query, then email [email protected]".

I hope this clears everything.

Hi Guys, Actually this IS the truth. The car in question was fitted with street legal VCool of 0% (which stops heat and harmful UV rays, as per VCool website) by the garage who sold it to him. They used VCool to fit the stuff and he was told it was legal. The law changed 3 months ago but nobody seems to know that NOTHING is allowed now.
The car has been through 4 re registrations and the last one was one month ago. Still the Abu Dhabi police felt it necessary to fine and have the “car” impounded not the person for 30 days. This is at the discretion of the guy involved to decide when he pays the fine and takes the car in. It is going to go further!
By the way 30% is only for the side windows and this fine, apparently is for ALL not just expats
I know because I know this person very very well!
CLEAR tint is not legal on front windscreens, please believe me or you too will be out of pocket by 10,000ued (1500 Euros, 2000$)
What is wrong with a warning like you would get in most countries with a week or month to get it sorted?
