Etihad Pilot Arrested for tinted windows.

Apparently on his way to work, the EY pilot was pulled over by the police.

They inspected his windows (word is he had installed the Vcool expat legal model not the local 90% tint with holes for mirror viewing). He was told that no tinting is allowed front or back and that he was not in compliance with a new law.

The result a AED10 000 fine and upcoming 30 day incarceration.

This is totally farking mad. Maniacs driving all over the highways and this is what our highway police are good for. What an amateur bunch of useless wankers.

Anyone here know of the window tinting laws locally. I am about to take a scraper to my AED 5000 Vcool job, however the wife thinks 30 days in jail would be good for me. It would dry me out and I'd lose weight.

jetjockey737 27th Jun 2009 09:55

This is shocking....just as a matter of interest will he have to leave the country after his period of incarceration?

Volverine 27th Jun 2009 10:01

500 AED fine plus one week impounded car......Because you change anything in the colour of your car, even stickers.
Police officer said "You must declare it to CID and after getting permission, make the registration card modified".
True story.
Be aware.

OMDB-PiLoT 27th Jun 2009 10:04

Follow the law and you wont have to deal with such penalties. Local news papers have covered this law a million times already! What I don't understand is that some guys will go lie on the beach naked for hours and still have nearly 100% tinted windows in their cars. These tints are not air conditions that will cool down your car while you are away :ugh:Plus they make driving dangerous at night.

In my opinion, it's stupid to spend 5000 Dhs on tinting cars! What a waste of money. Do some charity instead!

Anyone here know of the window tinting laws locally.
All the suppliers (vcool, 3M etc) know the law and will advise - 30% or less.

Simple.

Eng AW139 27th Jun 2009 14:29

Window Tint

The standard is 30% however did you ever wonder how "others" got away with more. If you have a reason such as a skin condition and a doctor's note you can apply to increase the tint on the windows.:hmm:

I myself don't have the time to run around get such thing done, but my boss have the time to do such things.:}

You can increase the tint anytime - vcool etc. will stick whatever you want on the car.

It's up to you if you want to take the chance - plenty do and get away with it.;)

Tinting huh.......

F$%K.........F"ŁK......F*&K......
That sucks man...... Yuk!!

f$%k.........f"Łk......f*&k......
Excellent literature skytango1.
We live here and we have to follow the rule even if they are not applied to the local crazy guys. This is why you are "a guest". I know guests are not supposed to be treated like that, but this is what you get.
Thinking cool, those who don't like it, must leave. There are things these guys changed a lot since the early 80s because they needed to, but there are others they don't a give a toss.
Stay low as much as you can. Don't think you are back home in a country you can speak your mind even no one pays you any attention.

maddog62 27th Jun 2009 22:18

And by the way, the best Vcool filter (and the most expensive) is 20%....
It's not the tinting that reflects the heat...

woftam 27th Jun 2009 23:29

Wow, what a great place to live!!

Al Fakhem 28th Jun 2009 03:09

As maddog62 has already pointed out, the tint factor has nothing to do with the UV reflection factor. Pilots, of all people, should know this (no aircraft has darkened cockpit windows). Why a pilot would thus resort to heavy window tint is thus a mystery in itself.

Why the locals want to tint their car windows black is, of course, another issue. Given their driving style, they perhaps do feel some sort of embarrassment. Or is it that they wish to drive around their Russian female friends without too much visibility?

ironbutt57 28th Jun 2009 06:13

Got v-cool done on mine here, and it's clear, no tint, as the vehicle came with the windows already at maximum..the clear V-cool is just as effective as the tint..and legal..and yes I was under the impression that dark tint is legal for Emiraties, but not expat's..

Jetjock330 28th Jun 2009 10:28

Ironbutt57,

I had a clear tint on my front window from 3M, a clear leaded content to reduce the heat intake and I was stopped by a policeman, in a small access road and the police officer cautioned me to remove it, which I did 3 years ago or so.

Next time you find yourself stuck in traffic at the traffic light, have a look around you and usually you can spot the front window tint from square on. The occupants and inside cannot be seen, even though it is clear. It is therefore very easily picked up, if you know what you looking for. Try it next time, without crashing into the car in front of you!:}

THRCLB 29th Jun 2009 02:16

30% is the legal MAX tint can put in ur car .. any thing above u will get a fine ( 600-900) dhs ...

10,000 dhs fine is if u use 100% tint or reflector tint or if u put tint allover the front window ..regardless of the percentage( clear tint is ok )

thats last time i checked ..

Togalk 29th Jun 2009 06:28

It is amazing what crap you people post without reading the original post. It said he had the "Legal" 30% tint and was still fined. I believe that is what the post is about. Gulf Spec cars in the UAE come from the factory with NO TINT on the windows whatsoever you need to add something or you will bake. V-cool in Abu Dhabi did mine more than 5 years ago with the legal 30% tint and luckily I have not had any issues. The police here have been setting up road blocks lately and giving out fines, usually 500 dhs for ANYTHING they feel like. There is something up. But like someone else said, they still let the morons drive around driving on the shoulders, 200 kmh, left turns from the far right lane etc.......

OMDB-PiLoT 29th Jun 2009 11:17

@Togalk - It is amazing that you are the only one who posted without reading the first post! He was in violation of the new rule - No tints in front or back of the car!

linedriva 29th Jun 2009 12:52

So can anyone tell me if a Dubai registered car with rear tint is subject to a fine if driving in Abu Dhabi?

GBB 29th Jun 2009 14:21

OMDB,

Where did you get that new rule from? Have you got any web link?
Do you mean like no tint front and back at all? or clear one is ok?
I got 30% v-cool 2 years ago with clear one front and back. So Im just wondering now if I should take the front and back off.

Does anybody have link to some FACTS/OFFICIAL info (website) because I see different information/rules people provide here?

Short Approach? 29th Jun 2009 16:55

So Im just wondering now if I should take the front and back off.
Don't succumb to the stupidity of this place. Of course you shouldn't remove CLEAR UV protection. The poor sods have absolutely no idea what they're doin'. Luckily, in a few weeks they'll have found a new crazy idea to crack down on, and V-cool will be back in business.
