Dubai Safety <walking not flying>

The streets of Dubai are getting to be as bad as Rome or Miami.

I have three Pinoy friends who have been mugged on the streets of Dubai in the last few months.

One had her bag taken as she walked, early evening just outside her apartment in Diera.

Another in similar location.

The third was at 1am as she returned from work and exited her car lift, and walked the short distance to her accomodation, as she entered the lift, three gentlemen appeared, entered the lift and started to hit her. She was forced to enter her accomodation, and then they removed belongings from her and her friends.

She was badly brused, and reported to the police.

They quicky apprehended a gentleman, who was identified, and is now assisting the police with their enquiries.

The moral of this story, is to alert fellow Ppruners, Dubai is no longer the street safe haven that we all have been promised.

Remember the "locals" who follow cars from UAQ, and when in SJH, stop them and demand payment, or they will report their moonshine to the police.
DO NOT STOP IN SJH IF BUMPED OR A LOCAL POINTS TO YOUR TYRES etc, etc.

NO CRIME MY ASS.

I urge the authorities to do the needful.

Take care out there, is mace available in the pick and save yet. ?????

The Police replied to a letter in 7 days a few weeks ago.
You are allowed to transport alcohol ANYWHERE in the UAE if you have
a liquor license.

Never belive in promises....In Rome we say promise is dead...it was with belive me, don't warry ecc ecc

My friends in Rome now if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time...first they kill you and then may be they check if you have monay....

Dubai still a safe place....but do not forget never belive in promises...

Depends who's promising!

A promise from the indigenous of both mentioned countries, is not worth a damn.

One is incapable of telling the truth, the other wouldn't know the truth!

don't know about Dubai, long time since my last time there, but speaking of Rome can you give me an example of a place where not to be at the wrong time?

Born and raised in Rome so you can mention streets, alleys, backyards, nicks for suburbs, whatever.
I would rate Rome's crime rate absolutely in line with the majority of european cities, if not better.

But you may convince me otherwise and then I'll have to move to Dxb...

Gulfstream Aviator, you've never walked downtown Miami, 2 blocks from Bayside, around 7 pm, have you?
Just like walking down via Veneto, same time...

various responses

2 bag snatch in Rome two years ago. Hostess left bag on back of chair, told not to do it but "blonde moment".. gone.
Second snatch early eveing outside restaurant, by scooter riders buddy.
As I have no experience of mugging in other European cities, I can not compare.

Miami, was pax in rental car, took wrong way outside pound, within 10 mins totally lost, stopped at lights, to check map, within seconds door opened and bag takenfrom rear seat.

Re SJH, I am unaware that SJH now allows the transport of Alcohol. As you do not have a licence to buy in RAK or UAQ you thus can not have a licence to transport.

Not all flippers are spinners, some are actually real people with real lives and real values.

Thanks EGGW, Not many in Tinsley Greeen either.....

Possibly GSA because you don't NEED a liquor licence to buy booze in RAK or UAQ... So one wouldn't have one would one???

Yes, White Knight, but in Dubai, you need one to possess alcohol or have any in your home (or your car).

I'm sure someone will assure as all this is an urban myth, but I understand that if one of your dinner guests has an accident on his way home from your house and he's found to have consumed alcohol and you don't have a licence, should the police choose to, they could make life very interesting for you.

The Sandpit's a wonderful place until you step outside the sometimes very ill-defined bounds set for you by the people whose guests you are as an expat worker. Once you've stepped over that ill-defined line, things can go pear shaped very, very quickly.

Thanks WILEY - but I do have a liquor license... If you REREAD my post I WAS REFERRING to UAQ and RAK.. In other words there are plenty of people who shop at the Barracuda or Al Hamra WHO DON"T HAVE liquor licenses because they are muslim, low paid foreign labour etc etc - I would have thought that you'd know the score by now - and then they drive through to Dubai. Which is what was being talked about.....

I was gang raped then jailed in Dubai | The Daily Telegraph

This article about Fujairah is doing the rounds in the papers at home, another reminder to women folk becareful if you go out drinking without a licence anywhere in the UAE.
Before I get flamed, yes this does happen back home except we do not jail the victim.
