We all know of pilots that would succumb to reciting religious versus, and praying out loud rather than committing 100% of their attention to the task at hand in a full scale emergency.

to take every muslim pilots under the same hat because of this incident... no comment.
so, according to this logic, the Colgan Air accident of a Dash 8 Q400 in US some weeks ago (de-icing problems) means that all US small (or subsidiary) companies feeding for big airlines have insufficient trainings and/or bad maintenance procedures and/or stupid pilots?...
of course not.

I recommend people to get proper information before posting inappropriate comment. This article (title and content) says the pilot paused to pray before taking emergency actions... Start by having a look at the CVR video. It doesn't look like the guys did take the praying carpets while they tried to reach nearby boats and observing the sea/wind condition. I hope I will never have to face such a situation.

Technically: Allah did save them!
That doesn't change the fact that it was a dereliction of duty, as protrayed by the accounts. Ofcourse non but them were there so how can we really judge.
Hesitate to be too judgemental over fellow pilots who have experienced tragedy, fore you don't know what will happen to you tomorrow when you rotate and how you may be judged.

SFLY...!!Your post sounds really inaproppriate! One of the pilot's task in emergency is to (try)to establish priorities!
There are much more important think to do than praying when you got a dual engine flame out...!!!TIME is a important Factor in such a circumstance IMHO!!Isn't it??
That's what the article wants to underline i think.

zerozol,
don't get so defensive, the news are that THOSE pilots were jailed, beacause of the authorities found them guilty.
Nobody even implied that ALL muslim pilots are the same.
There are bad hindu, buddhist, shintoist, sikh, baha'i, jewish, atheist and even christian pilots flying all over.
YOU are the one generalising.
It's a bad situation all over, but there was an investigation and they were found guilty. Maybe the missed something due to poor training or were tired, who knows. But the fact is that 16 people lost their lives, and who ends up paying most of the time? the Fight Crew!

Technically: the aircraft design saved them not allah.
nor the pilot.
I dont think this thread was posted to see who saved who,
but to ponder a little bit about the priority of duties. if they PAUSED to pray.. before the emergency actions as it says.. then maybe they deserve the sentence.

loc22550 please have a look at the official report of the accident before trusting the dailymail and tell me when did the crew pause or interrupt any emergency procedure as it is abusively quoted by this high quality paper... What we hear on the CVR is not a crew going to the lavatories for ablutions and a set of full prayers but only the equivalent of the so popular "oh my god"...
By the way the crew is not in jail and it IS the accident Schumi Red Baron is reffering to.

Jail and 10-year ban for Thomson pilot!
Thomson pilot sentenced to six months in prison and has licence pulled for 10 years after reporting for duty at BHX whilst over the alcohol limit. (Coventry Crown Court UK 26 03 2009). Am I alone in thinking these incidents are occurring too frequently? Cheers bm

If the daily mail is not of your liking try REUTERS
Italy convicts crash pilot who paused to pray | International | Reuters
They're a little bigger and one of the most REPUTABLE news feeders in the world... but thats only my humble opinion, I'm sure you will disagree.
By the way, the ones who should be EXECUTED are the mechanics that installed the wrong gauge. BUT with good AIRMANSHIP as most north africans would tell you (you know who you are) it would not have happened if they had cross checked the gallons added with the fuel remaining.
So in the end it could have been prevented.

Sure there were around 6 seconds worth of audible prayers & references made to God, however the question we should be asking is, how preoccupied were they inside their heads with praying? Did this impede their judgment?

stop your prejudices against this pilot
this is a tunisian pilot ...tunisia although an arab and a moslim country, it is a very moderate islam and people would utter religious words although they are not practicing moslims...I heard the cockpit conversation before ditching, and I have even heard a cursing word the pilot uttered in Arabic,,,,so the pilot was not praying instead of doing the right procedures for ditchiing,,so please listen to it again and have a translator help you understand what the pilot said towards the end of the recording...so please stop your biaas against moslims and islam...at least not with us tunisians...
