New runway at Cairo Int'l

Hi all, consruction of new runway 05R/23L is almost complete and will start officially mid December.

Cairo used to have 05L/23R 05R/23L. The new Rwy is east of 05R/23L so it will take it's designator and the old Rwy will be named 05C/23C.

Letdown cahrts are allready published for Rwy 05C/23C but still ATC refer to it as 05R/23L so be advised they still refer to the old Rwy.

Read the current notam's for HECA and you will see all about Cairo and its RWY05C being referred to RWY05R until later, possibly mid December.

FMS's are not yet updated with the delay, so select RWY 05C (which is old rwy 05R) and cross check all details. No problems

HECA 05C or 05R

Just out of there on 09/04/09 and surprise, surprise 05C is still referred to by ATC and the ATIS as 05R. Surely it won't be too long before someone lands on the unopened new 05R. Since all nav. databases are calling 05C by the correct name, why can't the dozy natives adjust too?

05R

a NOTAM has been published that the rename of 05R to 05C has been delayed till 15th July 09 since 15th Feb 09

A0061/09 - AIRAC 02/08 EFFECTIVE DATE POSTPONED AS ITEM C. 15 FEB 16:10 2009 UNTIL 15 JUL
00:01 2009. CREATED: 15 FEB 16:08 2009
Also jeppesen has relesed this in it's new Jeppview Cycles

Type: Terminal
Effectivity: Temporary
Begin Date: Immediately
End Date: Until Further Notice

Until 15 JUL 09 for rwy 05C/23C the designation remains 05R/23L.

So I don't think pilots should have any problems landing on 05R (under construction) instead of the real 05R

In addition to this 05R is always used for landing and takeoff at HECA
while 05L Always for takeoff only and they will never let you do a Visual APP on 05s so you will always get an ILS APP.. New jeppesen charts also have a warning don't mistake new runway under construction

I don't think it would ever happen !

Careful, people! Back around 1979, when a new 15L/33R was constructed in JED, a number of aircraft tried, and some succeeded, in taking off on the closed 15R/33L, due to very confusing local procedures and runway markings...I think a DC-8 lost a landing gear to a ditch across the closed runway. This sounds like an accident waiting for the tired or unaware...possibly like the stupid "closed" runway at Taipai with active runway lights lit for years, misread during a driving rainstorm. Sam

SU-GCM, apologies for the unnecessarily rude final remark in my previous post........and I hope you are right about it not happening. However as one who is very familiar with HECA, you and I know that 19 out of 20 times the approaches will be made to 05R, but to those who are less familiar it's a murphy waiting to happen. As you point out, the Notam advises the deferral of name change, however all the nav. databases are calling old 05R as 05C. What's more there actually is a blacktop runway to the right of old 05R, so why not just change the names NOW, so the runways on the ground have names that reflect their relative positions?
