I would be joining also in a couple of weeks, as I understand the housing is very expensive and dificult to get. The company could provide you with a 2 bedroom apartment but if your family is to big that does'nt works. So plan to expend some money in rent. Only to overnights in India as far as I know, but that is going to chenge in the next 2 years.
Hope to meet you there and best of lucks.

You really should do some research before joining an airline , especially if you take children with you.
However , I like to help , so I can tell you that you will most likely have to pay a bit extra over your rent allowance , but you should get yourselves a very nice villa for that .
There are 700s and 800s ( more coming ) , and MOST of the flying is out of Oman , several nightstops .
Enjoy.

Housing depends entirely on your standard and location.

Recently, rents have shot up to a 100% increase in some places, so do expect to pay a bit to secure a good place.

Speedtwoten.....any news on your paperwork?

The housing here is very expensive if you are planning on living somewhere like MQ or Qurum.

My "employer" pays for my accommodation so I have nothing to worry about there and I am comfortably housed.

There has been a new law introduced that only allows landlords to increase rents by 15% per year and this is causing major grief because landlords are evicting tenants under the reason of "renovations" and then massively hiking up the rents for new tenants.

Expect to pay around 1000 - 1200 rials a month for a villa and around 600 - 800 rials a month for a decent two or three bedroomed apartment - all depending on location.

Areas I would recommend living are:
Madinat Sultan Qaboos (MQ), Shatti Al Qurum or some parts of Al Khuwair. (all about a 20 minute drive from the airport but due to roadworks at Bowshar and Ghala roundabouts it gets a bit mental in the afternoons so leave 15 minutes earlier if you are doing afternoon shifts.)

Athaibah, Mawahla, Al Hail....all near the airport.

Oman is a great place to live. Look me up when you get here.

Hi

In the latest FLIGHT magazine I have seen vacancies available for several positions in the flight operations dept.

Im surprised , the positions are for Chief Pilot , Instructors and others ~!

Where are Omani Pilots ?

I guess they have been having lot of Omanis in the airline, they cant get them for such managerial positions ?

Yes agreed , not any pilot can be a manager !

But there are Omanis who are capable of being a Chief Pilot or a manager !

So problem is the PAY but not qualified OMANIS !

Then thats an area which can be addressed to people concerned, I think OMAN was far ahead of other gulf states when it came to nationals only taking over important positions.

Its unfortunate you can not have Unions for Pilots in Gulf States, otherwise my airline when I joined 22 years ago as the most junior F/O my salary was just around 50$ a month , thru Pilot bodies like IFALPA and our own Unions we have managed to to be where we are today, including the likes of Kenya Airways.

Somone somewhere has to know who PILOTS are !
